Sleeping Bags

I am a heterosexual male of average build and height. 6'1" 180lbs. I'm looking for a 3 season sleeping bag but can't decide on what type. Rectangle, mummy or hybrid (rectangle with a hood). Any suggestions?

Aren't they like 9 lbs? For car camping, no problems. For any kind of backpacking, hell no.

I backpack with one. Being able to sleep more comfortably outweighs the added weight. Just pack lighter elsewhere if you're that worried about it. Or be prepared to drop big bucks on something lighter but possibly as warm.

Amazon lists the total weight (3 bags with the goretex bivy) as 12lbs.
On a side note, how heavy is the bivy by itself? Wouldn't mind having one of those.

God damn. If I am going to bivvy, my BD bivy including pole + -40F down bag is a combined 7lb. In winter saving weight is sometimes much more important, because you need a lot more gear to stay warm. The only time this is somewhat less true is if you can pull your gear on a sled instead of carrying on your back.

Bivy on its own is usually about one pound. Dunno how amazon figure two sleeping bags weigh 11lbs unless that is a worst case, biggest, warmest bag you can buy scenario

OP, Rectangles are more comfortable, with more footroom. Mummies are warmer, as they have less air space that your body heat has to process. If you CAN sleep in a mummy, they are always a better choice for use as a sleeping bag.

If your looking to DIY a cheap underquilt, a rectangle is a better choice.

Sorry, didn't even think you might want to see it. I was just looking at weight for different MSS's. This one is quite pricey.

If you were shorter and hetero I'd go with the mummy (being hetero really opens up the options because you aren't restricted as much to positions and your probably banging your bitch doggy style on top anyway) if you were homosexual I'd go with the square because they are easier to pair up or allow easier access for you and your partner to share, typically the homo encounter whilst /out/ involves the lonely mutualy beneficial relationship that is often a surprise encounter to either one or both parties. Not them, but You'd be surprised how livable you can make a shed nowadays.

Go stroll through a few of them outside of home depot. They are big enough to be considered a microcabin, and you can even find two story sheds in some places.

I would totes live in one if I had my own land somewhere.

Totally doable with a larger one as a studio apartment. The only real issue is A) finding a place to set it, and B) insulating it, as they are always made with 2x4's, unless you roll your own.

Toss up a room in a corner for a bathroom. Run plumbing and wiring underneath.

Totally thinking about working for a few years, buying a piece of land, and plopping one of the larger sheds on it. Electrical won't be a huge issue, but plumbing will be rough without a septic.

Hey! Fellow shed liver here. It's actually pretty comfortable and with a decent bag and mat even the coldest -12 , days aren't so bad (no heat, no electricity, I use a kettle for a toilet) .

I made my own shed in my garden a while back. Concrete foundation with pvc pipes running through it filled with a power cable, and a hose with a tap at the end. Four posts, one for each corner, I think 12 feet apart so it was a square. Regular angled board on the outside absolutely COATED with woodstain and then some left over fibreglass insulation and plywood to cover that on the inside.Old PVC window I had laying about too, which was draughty as shit because I'm not that good at DIY. Angled plywood roof with three layers of roofing felt, again because I got it free from my dad. Built a iroque? wooden desk on one side from an old kitchen unit from my uncle. Put a hammock up the other side, a load of shelves with books and tools on dotted around the place. Used it for my chill out zone 8 months of the year but it was too chilly in the winter. I considered using a cast iron stove thing for heating but I was afraid of the excessive heat damaging the walls.

I recommend it. At the very least it's a learning experience. I think I'll do it again if I move out the city again. Also, the husband who bought the place said it was something that nudged him to buying it because it was quite a unique selling point.

I would most likely build my own shed with proper materials though. Saves money, and I could build it like a modular cabin system. My nuts are throbbing just thinking about it.
