Can anyone tell me about what kinds of gear I need as a beginner hiker/camper?

I know the sticky lists the ten essentials but that's just a bare minimum right? And it doesn't actually say what brands or specific items are good or where to get all that stuff.

Start off with relatively cheap stuff so you can find out what you like and dislike before you spend big bucks. Mora or Schrade knife, Plumb or Council axe or hatchet, chinarocket stove, wal-mart or milsurp mess kit, backpack under $50. Go high quality on boots, a sleeping bag, and tent or hammock.

Short-term camping minimum:
Premade, no-cook food (like granola bars)
Water
Shelter (tent, tarp, hammock)
Sleeping bag suited to your temperatures
Foam sleeping pad
If cold weather, ALSO get an inflatable pad.

Day hiking minimum:
Premade, no-cook food
Water (1L start if there is water available on trail, if no water on trail, then up to 4L depending on trail length and difficulty)
Comfortable walking shoes/boots
Climate-approriate clothing
Backpack to carry food/water

Start on established trails where you can't get lost. Don't go off trail without navigation skills and a compass at minimum.

If you have genuine questions feel free to ask, but this is pretty basic stuff that most people overthink. Dayhiking is not really much different than spending a day walking around a city.

A Mora is largely a Mora. Go for one without much guard. I'd get a Schrade Old Timer Woodsman, it's not much more than a Mora and is a bit stronger. A china rocket stove is a cheap version of a very light camping stove that you can get on ebay for like five bucks.

Take everything. Everything you could envision needing to survive in the woods a mile away from the comfort of your bed. Take binoculars, those manual chain saws, three moras, a bucket and all sorts of things which sound like they may be vaguely useful. By the time you get home, you should know what to pack next time.

Even now I take useless shit out with me, because you never know how it might come in useful.
