>>440933>>440938these. i usually carry a mora and a leatherman while camping, and thinking about the last several trips i've been on the most common use for either was food prep. what tasks are larger, sturdier knives going to be used for? batoning? i've literally never been in a situation where i _needed_ to baton wood for a fire.
this is, of course, simply my experience, involving shorter trips in state/national parks. if you're on a two week long trek way in the back country, having a knife you know won't fail under any circumstances would be nice, but i'd be willing to bet that's not the majority of /out/. even those who do go on longer trips, i'd bet they spend more time on shorter trips as well.
my expensive, light weight pack, tent, sleeping bag, pad, and boots, however, are all used constantly, and not having them would restrict when and where i could go.
