Some are really good

Highly recommend maple (pork) patty
Any of the pastas or tortellini
The granolas with powdered milk are awesome
So are the milkshakes (why don't we have these powderized milkshakes at the store wtf)
The cheese/jalapeño cheese spread and cobblers look fucking gross, but close your eyes and eat and its still really good

The brisket is okay, but has the exact appearance of dog food.

Some contain "first strike" energy bars and those are nasty as shit always every time

TERRIBLE for backpacking because of weight.
Freeze dried is much lighter, tastes better. You can also make your own backpacking meals. Granola with powdered milk is easy to make up in a quart ziploc. Nestle makes a product called Nido that is powdered WHOLE milk. You can find it in mexican/latino markets or online. Makes it taste a lot better. For lunch the vacuum packed tuna/chicken/salmon are great. Throw some sturdy candy in, great for morale.

I've eaten MREs for a month straight couple times. You don't shit the first week or so, then you have the biggest shit of your life. After that you shit every few days and it's pretty much the same as the first.

Depends on what you're intending to do with it. If you're just going for a hiking, camping trip, leisurely or even with a bit of strenuous activity, most of the dudes here are right. You can pack more meals for the weight, that have more variety.

That said, if you're intending to do some kind of constant heavy activity that's similar in the body taxation of a combat operation, your body will thank you for all that excess fat, sodium, and protein.

Keep in mind you can also strip certain things out that you don't need, if you take the essential components, then you won't really be taking on too much excess weight. Really light meals often require rehydration, MRE's do not, so you can save weight in water if you need to.

As to everyone saying other food tastes better, don't pay attention to that, it's all opinion and I'm wagering most people are just regurgitating information about military rations tasting poor.

guy i met overseas had learned some MRE magic and made a little chocolate cake by mixing the milkshake with something else i can't remember, maybe the little creamer packet? he stuck that shit in an ammo can out in the sun in the middle of july (was getting up to about 130F) and an hour later he had a cake, tasted pretty nice.

sc/out/s pretending that a stripped MRE isn't the single best option for inna woods. It has high calorie high fat food for energy, toiletries, snacks and even candy. Coasts the same a a "large" dehydrated meal and lasts for a decade if stored correctly.

Go ahead with your single serving dehydrated foods, I'll suffer the unbearable weight of stripped MRE's and have hot meals anywhere, faux Gatorade, shit tickets and hot coffee with cream and sugar for the same cost.

Personally when I go /out/ I bring a mix of both...I even carry a few cans of peaches, but I'm obviously insane. The funniest thing is sc/out/s crying about a 25 pound pack, we humped with 80 pound rucks all over the sandbox and hardly a singe fuck was given really.

Keep in mind that a Mountain House "single item" has two servings in the bag. It's just two servings of the same dish. If you shop online, you can generally find better deals. I can get the "pro-paks" (vacuum-packed single serving Mountain House foods) for $5.90/serving shipped, though, and I'm pretty sure the cheapest MREs are around the $8-9 range at the cheapest.

If weight is the only consideration then go with overly heavy sodium bombs like mountain house and wise. I think there are other more important things than weight all the time. I want some diversity in my meals over a 10 or 15 days stay in the woods and MRE's will always be half of my meal plan...most of my meal plan if it's my first time in the area and I am not familiar with the local water sources.

The thing about dehydrated stuff is it's low fat and that matters when hiking. Also the packages don't really fill you up when you share them. So the space issue really isn't a thing when you get real about it.

I eat dehydrated stuff and have a room full of mountain house, Wise, and as many other sources of long shelf life foodstuffs as I find edible along with commercial and milsurp MRE's for SHTF. I will eat like a pig at the end of the world trust me. I just don't think dehydrated deserve to have their praises sung here as loudly as we do.

No, do what the rest of us have done and try a few. Strip out all the unnecessary packaging and things you wouldn't want with you camping or hiking and then weigh them before sampling for taste. Reading about things is great but no substitution for hands on knowledge.
It's obvious up front that even stripped down they will weigh a bit more than a comparable amount of dehydrated pouches but not so much that we should just disregard them all together.

According to Google, MREs weigh anywhere from 18-26 oz. That is not at all comparable to a freeze-dried entree, since it includes things like cookies, nuts, and raisins, which are not precluded from a person's kit when they are packing freeze-dried food. Let's talk apples to apples, then, which would be comparing one entree to another.

US Military MRE (Spaghetti with Meat and Sauce, according to this image I found on Google):

Now introduce the variables anon. Like ease of use...the extras that are already in them and the fact that it would take 4 or 5 times the cost of dehydrated foods to equal them. I eat dehydrated foods so don't try and pretend they are anywhere near as filling or satisfying as an MRE...something you can't know because you have only READ about them.

MRE's are better in almost every way besides weight. Go ahead and enjoy your dehydrated meals, I never said they sucked and have gone as far as to say I have a ton of them in case of the rapture. I'll mix my menu up and make sure I can have hot meals during multiple days if inclement weather, I'll play it safe when I go 10 days into an area where no one I personally has gone to tell me first hand about e local water sources. But for you to be this mad because I say things you can't actually know since you haven't even so much as held one in you hand is pure autism. I keep forgetting to say that the added weight can be taken out of a pack....like toilet paper, coffee auger and creamer, snacks and powdered drink mix.

SO taking that into considerations the weight of a stripped MRE is hardly a fucking thing anyway. If you want to be anal anout "ounces make pounds" I say that considering everything you get in an MRE you hardly add any real weight to a back pack. Take the ease of use and I saw WWCD. The entree is 2x heavier than a Mountain House entree of a comparable menu item, and it has almost half the Calories; plus, the heater pouch weighs an additional few ounces. An MRE comes with lots of things so if you want to be honest about things you will admit that the exchange in weight in a pack with an MRE is for more than just ONE food item, which is what a pouch of M'H is..Its one single food item. Take into considerations MRE provides EVERYTHING you need for a day and the pouch of M/H barley constitutes a full meal and MRE's come out ahead.

If you want to simply talk weight I'll say the same thing...with MRE's you don't have to add a lot of things to your pack, it comes with drink flavoring and coffee and snacks and shit tickets so all the weight isn't just the food portion. Most of the non-entree parts of the MRE's can be easily replicated. I mean damn you can just steal condiment packets, utensils and napkins from a fast food place. And get better, fresher crackers and powder drink mixes in bulk for extremely cheap. Just repack everything into smaller bags for single serve use.

I never said it wasn't possible to gather all the stuff in an MRE. I said MRE's are the best value for camping, I said that compared to the cost of one M/H or Wise meal they were the best bang for the buck. I also said that taking everything an MRE came with in to account the "weight" of one was hardly a factor when adding up the total the weight of a pack.

My math is good and I know this because I go on 10 and 15 day outings several times a year. I understand what it means to not have a water source available. Having food that is ready to go, that you can heat and eat inside your shelter without fire is a huge plus.

i bring 5 dollar frozen stir fryups which only slightly unthaw because i generally camp from temps of 10C to -10C.

in winter camping i can drag a sled and gear weight means little.

Hiking through all of the Rocky Mountains, you never have to carry more than 1-2 liters of water at a time. If you camp near a water source, you can just get your water when you need it. Filters are a non-item. I carry Aqua Mira chemical treatment, which weighs a couple ounces, and I would be carrying anyway because I'm gathering water throughout the day. You don't need to purify or filter water that you're just going to boil for your meal, though. The boiling kills everything in the water.

I'm pretty sure that's not true. The components of a dehydrated pack of freeze-dried food will indeed by "anhydrous" (a non-informative, fancy word that means "having all water removed"); however, once the meal is RE-hydrated when it's cooked, it ceases to be as such.

nope, the food never regains its former state, and if you follow the directions, the food is still underhydrated. some people do double hydrating(waiting) time and it still ends up anhydrous and forces your body to process more water to digest.

You will need more water when eating any kind of dehydrated foods and MRE's as well, you should drink a considerably greater volume of water all the time you are away from civilization really. Proper hydration stops lots of bad things from happening. It will help your immune system stay strong, keep your muscles limber and your joints lubricated. You will sleep better and have more energy and trust me..constipation in the woods can truly fuck your trip up. Try hiking 15 miles out of the woods with a slightly impacted colon...not my idea of a good time.

MRE's are like any other military gear. Cheap and sturdy. They last a long time and they get the job done but they're a lot heavier than civilian gear. Freeze dried meals (civilian gear) are only barely more expensive and in many cases cheaper, don't last quite as long, but taste better and are higher quality.

So it's not that the rats get them that is significant - it's how many, at which point in their lifespan etc.

A mountain house pouch cost about the same, if you buy it in bulk (12 pouches like a case of MREs). Granted its about twice the size of the main entree item of the MRE its (subjectively but generally speaking) better tasting food but that certainly doesn't come close to hooking you up with everything the MRE gives you. Not to mention at least for me variety is a huge plus. I also typically eat an MRE parts at a time and with the mountain house you got to prepare the whole thing at once more or less.

By the way, this isn't a diss at mountain house, I like there stuff for what it is. Its just not at a price point that competes with an MRE directly.

If that wasn't an accurate summary if what you seem to be trying to say, then be more clear. I admit that some foods need more water to fully digest than others. Beef jerky is one of them. Without enough water, you will not get all the nutrients out of the meat as you would a fresh steak. Despite the over whelming response I still took the MRE. In my opinion it was well worth the weight and bulk. I did in fact some dry food too blue mountain biscuits and pork gravy (tasted and looked like a biscuits paste) if I had to compare the too food items I would say I enjoyed the MRE more. The drink opinions and snacks that came with it greatly enjoyed and the small roll of toilet paper saved me 2 times (getting the fire ready and shitting that biscuit cream out of me)

nope, the nutritional info from the side of the bag is from the food by pre dehydrated weight, so the measuring method is not only retarded and youre only getting at best 2/3 of the true calories(which is even less that whats listed and only if you let it sit for 30mins or more, which you dont).

If you're travelling in the mountains (read: snow) for days, and needing to boil your own water, i.e. ski mountaineering, MREs are a ton of extra weight with no real advantages, not to mention you have to continue carrying a bunch of packaging trash afterwards. Freeze dried meals like mountain house are going to be less than half the weight. Having to carry all that water around is a stupid idea if you're already surrounded by water (snow).

MRE's are fine for car camping and casual hiking, but if you're actually trying to save weight, freeze dried is the way to go. Plus, freeze drying is an effective method of preservation, meaning they're not loaded with preservatives like MREs. Also, this MRE shill guy is pulling out of his ass this stuff about freeze dried food having "anhydrous characteristics" after being rehydrated. Shit doesn't make any sense.

Bottom line is, MREs might be worth if if you're in a desert environment, but if there is water all around you, such as in the cascades or rockies, there's no point in carrying all that water for the entire journey. Just carry the solids (fat, carbs, proteins) and save some weight.

MREs make about as much sense as your heavy cotton Carhart there, OP.

Freeze dried food doesn't loose any nutrients. There are a few things that it can't preserve like alcohols and some acids but you will still have your vitamins and minerals.

You can eat them cold (which SUCKS), and if you do you can keep the heating pack as a sweet warmer.
I went camping with a buddy in the mountains and completely underestimated the cold going there, tore open an MRE and used it to warm my shit.
Also 10 bucks is way expensive. I got a place here that sells them for 5, and a box of 15 for 40

Nope, don't bother. If the water is inside your food you are carrying less food. Here's an item list for backpacking food and carry a water filter with a good pot/kettle (about a liter, you'll want a large container)
1) 2lbs bag of white rice
2) 1lbs dehydrated mixed vegetables, get a couple of different kinds, carrots, peas, onions, etc. diversity is good here.
3) 1lbs dehydrated fruits, again you'll want a grab bag but apples, oranges, and stuff like that are great.
4) 3 0.5lbs packs of dehydrated soup stock, each a different kind. Recommend beef, chicken, and pork stocks.
5) 1lbs total of spices: salt, pepper, garlic, onion, cayenne, cloves, ginger, lemon pepper.
6) Wild edibles handbook, actually know how to identify these plants, don't be guessing when you get out there especially on the mushrooms.
7) some way to get fresh meat, a 10/22 is great.

In less than 15lbs you can eat diverse and nutritionally robust porridges, soups, stews, and the like for a month.

That being said, MREs are an expensive solution to a simple problem. Their bulk is also a pain in the ass.

The real upside to an MRE is that it's pretty secure to the elements. However, there's ways to accomplish the same with less expensive, lighter weight, more well-balanced food.

The garlic and herb chicken MRE is also the fucking antichrist and comes with no heater. It was one of the most disgusting things I have willingly put in my mouth, and I would advise giving it to an enemy before consuming yourself.

Most other menus are alright.

Avoid the eggs.

Remember if buying MRE's to put on a shelf in case of some emergency always buy fresh production. The only way to guarantee that 5 to 7 years of being edible is to be sure they were stored correctly.

They are in our shops, like cocoa powder drinks, I've tried vanilla, it's nice. Might grind it into a meal, mix with powdered milk, and make myself some drink bags.

MREs are nice. I think I'll take them out of the brown bags before setting out, they're smaller to pack.

It's a PITA to inflate, but there's not anything much better to fuck on than a double height queen size mattress in the boonies under the stars. Just remember to put something under it so you don't make it go flat from holes in the bottom.
