He doesn't really get into the social aspect of the AT, he gives the impression that people are kinda dicks there, really.
He bitches and moans constantly, despite wanting to be there..
A lot of people got pissed at his companion for violating LNT by throwing all his useless shit off of a mountain, but the consensus is that almost everything to do with the other guy is made up or embellished. There's actually no record of him ever hiking the AT with this guy.
But yes, too many people look to it as a guide to the AT or thru hiking in general when it is definitely not. The book these people are looking for is something like AWOL on the Appalachian Trail or Appalachian Trials, which are day by day trail journals. But they're fucking boring because hiking boils down to "Woke up early in the morning. Hiked for a few hours. Stopped and ate a Snickers bar and some jerky for lunch. Hiked a few more hours. My feet hurt. I stink. I have a beard. Went to a shelter and saw some people. I boiled some water and ate a freeze dried meal. Went to sleep at 8 PM. Woke up." That's not really compelling literature.
What it did succeed in was making me want to get out there and experience nature, which is a success in my book.
