Hey /out/, first post here, didn't see an astronomy thread so I thought I would start one.

*Do any of you hike in the outdoors to escape light pollution?
*What telescope do you use?
*How can I find out what I will be able to see in the night sky in the location and time I am in? i.e. can I see the milky way in San Diego tonight?

use that app that shows start positions. also google earth and turn on the sky, weather, make it night time the day you plan to go out and start a ground view. look up and see what's there. as for light pollution just get out there in nature away from the city

To some sources my country is 2nd most polluted in EU yet we have some really cool skies in the countryside. Andromeda galaxy is easily seen for example.

I was about to say "Don't you mean the Milky Way?" until I looked it up. Holy shit, never knew you could see Andromeda with the naked eye. That's fucking cool.

It looks like a star with the naked eye but if you view it through a telescope I believe you can see the shape of the galaxy

not really, it looks like a smudge with the naked eye, it's way too big and vague to be confused with a star, even it's center. You probably confused it with a star in it apparent proximity.
