It's not just food. It's all smellables- deodorant, chapstick, toothpaste, bug spray, sunscreen, etc. Also don't carry anything berry scented/flavored. Heard of somebody who put cherry chapstick on before bed, put the tube in the bear bag and woke up to a bear licking his lips.

You don't need to be quarter mile away. You DO want to be sleeping in separate locations from your cooking site and bear bag, arranged in a rough triangle (supposed to be) ~100yds apart. Usually mine end up being like 50 because bears aren't common so I'm defending against raccoons at that point.

Don't you wear these on your body? I would think that these things produce more of a scent when slathered out all over your open skin than they do bottled up in their little containers.

Your open skin produces a lot of scent in its self, which most animals normally avoid. The idea is to have things that will definitely attract animals (food, food scented items, etc) away from you as much as possible. That's why your kitchen is separated from your tent and your bear bag as well. The kitchen is probably more likely to get visitors than the bear bag, so separating the two lessens the chance of an attempt on your bag.

According to the National Park service it is at least somewhat true in regard to Grizzly burrs. I remember reading a brochure on safe bear practices and they mentioned to be extra careful with used feminine products and to not have sex in the back country.

I keep my food in a bear proof container, or keep it hung in a tree away from my tent when when im sleeping at nite or away from my campsite during the day. basically, only have food stuffs out and available during meal time or a pocket full of snacks on daytime excursions away from camp.
But when im cooking i dont spill and scatter crumbs of food everywhere so i never have to worry about "food smells" around my campsite. its not that hard

Thru-Hiked the AT and I hung a bear bag one time in 6 months of hiking. Saw plenty of bears, never had a problem with them.

I know people who had problems with bears, but to me it wasn't worth the effort of doing it every night.

One weekend trips and the like (especially if I'm with inexperienced hikers) I'll hang a bag just so people don't get stressed out.

Probably has also to do with the fragrances that they are commonly scented with. As well as blood. Dark, hot stanky period blood. Full of bacteria to enhance the odor.

i have 500 acres backing up to bear sanctuary in nc. i camp and hunt and fish and walk /ride the land all the time. see bears occasionally. never had an issue. this is also in an area where during hunting season i routinely see 600+ lb boars.

Always hang my food bag.

I can't stop the bears from visiting my camp, but if they do I don't want them touching muh food. If the bears ruin my food, that's a ruined trip. That could leave me several days or a week travel to get back out of the woods with no packed food to eat. Fuck that.

Been camping for approx 20 years. There are almost always bears in the area. I never hang my food. I just keep it in a tub. Only problem I had with my food was a coon or something derping around my campsite at night. All this dad science about hanging food and stuff. On the ground or in the air the bear will still smell it and then you. Bears rarely fuck with people and if they do I hope you have spray or a gun.

I was camping one time and cooking chicken over a fire, in the middle of the night no less, then I seen these glowing eyes off in the distance... shined my flashlight onto it.. BEAR.. oh shit...keep my light shined on it, slowly walk back towards car and get into car. Watched the bear from the car with the headlights turned on... the bear never did try to get the chicken... Black bears are pretty damn pussy actually... but they will try to get your food if you're not careful. Moral of the story: seal your food up good and you'll be fine... and don't go into bear territory when the bears might be extra hungry (just before hibernation, and right after they wake up)
