Hey /out/. friends birthday is coming up, and he wants to get into fishing. He is a crafty guy, and mentioned he wants to eat the fish. We live in Canada, and am planning on ordering off of Bass Pro shops Canada website. Can someone recommend me all the tools needed to properly eat a fish from the accessory section on the website? also, this is the tackle box he wanted. Any opinion on these?

I have not thought about that. Are there generic tools for all fish? Sorry, new at this myself. I just kind of wanted to set him up. We live near Toronto, but want to go to the French River in the summer, and possibly some ice fishing this winter. So really, Ontario is where we are fishing, if you know what fish are all there.....sorry again

Im in Ontario too, live in Barrie area, but I go up to French River a lot
there are lots of fish in Ontario man
but not all of them are going to taste good
French River is great for Walleye, nice big trophy fish there too like big Pike and Muskie all through the summer and fall
Walleye are more fall when they migrate through but still there all year

Bassfishing there too is pretty solid, really an all around rich river system

as for eating, personally I don't like the taste of muskie or pike at all, it tastes pretty nasty tbh and I usually get a picture with the big ones then let them go since its really kind of sad to kill such a noble huge fish (the bigger ones being 15+ years old)

I'd say you let them go too so that you don't drain the system of the big fish and respect the animal more

Bass however tastes pretty good, and Walleye is great as well if you know how to cook it up, Trout I really like but some people think it tastes fishy

bring a pan with you and a small stove, get a bit of garlic, olive oil, and maybe some green onion then fry the fish fillets up for a great /out/meal right there in the boat or on the shore

what tools do you need for skinning, scaling and what not? Did you have any opinions on the tacklebox in the main post? Thanks for your response. I am new to this aswell. I really like rainbow trout, I often get it from the grocery.....

pic related is all you need, hell even just the fillet knife is enough if you don't want to scale them right away, though you probably should if you wan to eat them there

if you want to learn exactly how to gut and clean a fish there are tons of videos on Youtube going over it
if you are willing to spend more there are electric scalers as well, but manual is pretty simple tbh

if you are new maybe bring a book or something to help you identify the fish so you know what you're catching

as for ice fishing, might as well go to a lake instead since the fish won't be biting as much up river before migration

like i said, you can really be ok with just a fillet knife but there are lots of other more specialized tools as well

you probably don't need them though, they are not really necessary especially just for casual fishing

I actually know a guy who tried this, brought a deep frier up to the cabin, caught a few fish, then just threw them in whole until they were fishsticks

I think with an Angler license you can keep up to 4 fish, fish that die by accident and you cant release could towards that as well

I think you can get make "cooking a fish" as simple or complicated as you want. You could very well gut it with your pocket knife, stick it on a pointy stick and hold it over a fire, or you can make Trout Parmesan Fillets served over Risotto paired with a nice Pinot Gresieo.

Both options are equally valid, it's just personal preference. Clearly one will require more time, effort, and special equipment.
