>>443246The back-cuts need to be higher (Cut 2). It does two things. 1 is create a hinge that keeps the trunk in place as it falls and 2 it creates a kickstop to prevent the trunk from sliding back. The back-cut is also how you can control the direction of the fall in relation to the front cut. You can actually steer the falling tree a bit just as it starts to fall be adjusting your cut (when using a chainsaw).
However, always plan your escape route with the intention of there always being a kickback. always run away, never stick around for any reason. Even a grazing hit from the end of a moving trunk of a rather small tree can strip muscle from bone, shatter your skull, and of course kill you.
