>>445756without wishing to be rude I must disagree with you anon, if you have an axe to hand then you should chop the wood you need into thinner/smaller pieces using the axe, batoning is supposed to be something you do in a situation where you need to make a fire right away and the only wood you have is to thick.
Batoning is a risky move because it increases the chance of damaging your knife greatly, if you have time then you should collect wood of varying thickness's and start your fire that way, batoning was only ever meant as a last ditch move when you had NO OTHER CHOICE.
We have to blame Youtube for the current belief that batoning is to be used all the time, as YT grew knife testers would baton to show that the knife was capable in an emergency of doing it, but slowly over time everyone has forgotten the EMERGENCY part and now they think it's what you should do all the time.
