Just got back from a trip around the southern end of New Zealand.
Did a bit of camping out in South Canterbury and Central Otago on the way through and though I'd share a few pics.

I had a fair bit of /k/ style milsurp lying around so that was what my load mainly consisted of. I'd got hold of a British Army Individual Protection Kit for cheap ($NZ10) and some grommets and a couple of fibreglass tent poles and decided to see if I could build a portable shelter I'd seen used as a kid.

Of course the big problem with the IPK is that it's designed to cover a trench to keep radiation out, not be slung as a tarp to keep the weather out, but to my mind if it will work ok as the first it will work Ok as the second too.

I laid the tarp out, doubled the seams, cut out and grommeted the corners,plus one into the centre of the short sides and 3 more into the long sides.
The main problem I now had was that the grommets were too small for the large pegs that came with the set but 3x perfectly normal tent pegs later we;re ready for a test drive on the lawn.

It was a quite windy day so figured if it could last a couple of hours there it should be all right.
Soon found out the only problem with it was operator error. The peg on the right rear wasn't in far enough and managed to bring the whole thing down after about 1/2.
A quick re-jig, re-tightening of lines and we're good for three hours till I packed it away ready for the great day.

Had a good look round the canal system and salmon farms, went for a wander along the Ohau River then set up camp in a nice wee spot under the Lake Ruataniwha dam.
As you can see I'd changed my mind about which sleeping bag to take since the test on the lawn.

Next stop was the Timaru River, near Lake Hawea.
I have no idea how those sheep got up there, much less how theyt got down. We counted 9 of them at one stage.

Next stop, up into the Dingleburn River. Fun drive around that bluff. The road was blasted into the rock face back in the 60s. It's been shored up where its fallen away in a couple of places and goes either straight up or straight down.
Not a good place to meet oncoming traffic.

Again, the tarp handled it well. This time found a couple of small trees I could use instead of the back poles, so it was a lot more secure.

After that spent a couple of days in Wanaka, Queenstown and Glenorchy, mainly doing pic related.
Went for a few wanders around the place but mostly just pitching camp beside a road/in a picnic area after it got dark and moving on a first light.

Having checked out as much of Central Otago as we could in the time allowed, we headed back through the Maniapoto. This pic was from the last camp on the way back. Met a farmer who insisted we stay in one of his paddocks. And that we let his wife cook us breakfast. While we drank whiskey with him.

Well, Milford is due west of the Routeburn. In the middle of a national park, so bould to be somewhere you can pitch camp.

You'd really want good insect repellent/mosquito net in Milford though.

OP here. You do get mosquitos, but didn't come across any on this trip. Did see a LOT of sandflies. Little black midge sized things that usually bite and itch like a mosquito.
Worst place for them was at the Timaru River. Sounded like it was snowing that morning, but it was just the sheer weight of them.
I did have a mosquito net that fits over the boony hat in that pick. Probably only wore it twice the whole trip, and then just first thing in the morning.
