the most innawoods place is the Altai.
It's among the most amazing places in the world.
The closest major city to that place would be Barnaul. I really don't know much of it, but the economy there is bad(even by local means).
Also Irkutsk close to the Baikal like.
Both of the cities are in Siberia, so tempertures may drop to as low as -50 celcius in the winter(that's as low as it goes though).
The climate is harsh.
Gun laws are ok with russians, but it takes some time to get a gun(you get one by getting a hunters license + medical commision) I believe.
I really don't know how that works for a foreigner though.
I don't now much /out/ relevant info about the western part of the country.
we have had several lads from Brazil come as exchange students and no one encountered racial / nationalistic problems. All went very well.
a 1000 dollars(Make that 600 after the rouble went to hell) is more than enough for a good living(with no luxuries).
