They almost always say they're "1/8 Cherokee" specifically. In both cases, you have someone who doesn't really imagine full-blooded Irish or Cherokees as real people, and can't imagine daily life in modern Ireland or Oklahoma. I think for most people, though, the issue is that there is no American ethnicity as such, so they have to put together what they can.
As for OP's question, I'm led to believe that the terrain is called moor or fen, but my dialect of English has no familiar word for it, because there isn't anything like that around here.
