I just moved to California a few months ago, from Idaho, never camped in the desert before
any tips?

Where I hike around in the desert, most are barred shut and all that. So it will be hard to find an open one, and if you do, it's a sure way to die if you go into it. Don't do it.

Prickly-pear cacti can act as an emergency source of water. The stem segments (called cladodes) and fruits are edible. If you camp in the summer bring a cot or a way to rig a hammock, and some kind of sunshade. Resting/sleeping ON the ground can be as much as 15 degrees warmer than 18 inches above the ground. It will get cold at night.

Making a fire will fucking suck because there will be nothing to burn but dry shrubs. You might get lucky and find a dead log somewhere, and at least it'll be dry. I go camping in AZ, but I avoid the desert. It's boring out there.

These facts are not difficult to find. Absolutely no idea where this moronic rumour comes from. It is a myth. It has no basis in fact. Cactus are not a source of emergency water.

It also wont hydrate you. Sure, I'm erring on the side of hyperbole about how sick it'll make you. Most will actually just give you the shits if you try to consume enough to quench your thirst. But they won't hydrate you, period. There's too much else in them. Alkaloids and acids that simple will not allow your body to get any hydration, at all, from sucking a cactus. You will lose moisture.

You sound like an intelligent person. As such, you likely realize that special forces training is intended to prepare a soldier to survive in a variety of environments they may operate in. It doesn't matter if his native country is England; he's been instructed to survive in areas, like a desert. That being said, I'm willing to trust his survival training and knowledge regarding using plants, like cacti (prickly-pear, in this case) as emergency sources of water. No one in this thread has said this is a long-term source of water. I would have though the word "emergency" made that clear.

There's not a lot of moisture in it, and you use water to digest/process what food value it has.

It does cook into a nice jam though..

You'd be better off looking for a wash and locating a seep, or finding a cattle tank that still has water.

Otherwise shade in the day and move at night.

You would be wrong in your guessing. I've had it fresh off the plant, prepared as nopalitos, and have collected/consumed the fruits from multiple Opuntia species. Maybe you've had experiences with more dry Opuntia species, but there are plenty of prickly-pears that are extremely laden with moisture.

I agree, it's better to find a flowing source of water or some standing water that could be boiled. But when you're hard-up for moisture in a life or death situation, you'll take what you can get.

The stuff I would find south of the Bradshaws were pretty damned leathery unless you were dealing with the fruit, and then you needed to burn off the hairs.

Much north if you headed east you'd eventually find water. (provided you didn't find a rancher first)
Now making a steady diet of the water coming out of those hills is not a good idea, but better than trying to get the juice from a pear-ear.

The chemicals in prickly pears dehydrate you. Fresh, cooked, or anything but stewed. They have acids and alkaloids that take more water for your body to process than they give in water when consumed. Prickly Pear Mead

Ingredients for 5 gallons (19 l)

20 lbs. (9.1 kg) light honey (mesquite is preferred, but clover, alfalfa or other light honeys will produce superb results)
5-6 lbs. (2.3-2.7 kg) red, ripe prickly pear cactus fruit
1/4 tsp (0.6 gm) powdered yeast extract (nutrient)
1 T (8.1 gm) pectin enzyme (optional)
1 oz. (28.4 gm) dried and rehydrated wine or Champagne yeast. Sherry yeast can also be used as an addition. Champagne yeast works very well in combination with sherry yeast.

Target Original Gravity (Original Plato/Balling): 1.130-1.150 (30-35 degrees Plato)

Final Gravity (Plato/Balling).: 1.025-1.050 (6-12.5 degrees Plato

Procedure

Slice the fruit or chop in a food processor and boil with 2 1/2 gallons (9.5 l) of water for 2 hours. Be very, very careful: Take care not to scorch the fruit and seeds that settle to the bottom. Meanwhile combine the honey with 1 gallon (3.8 l) of water and boil for 15 minutes. Skim off the coagulated white albumin protein as it forms on the surface of the boil. Turn the heat off.

Strain the boiled juice of the fruit into the honey brewpot. Then add this concentrated honey "wort" to a sanitized fermenter and cold water to make 5 gallons (19 l). Aerate this unfermented “brew.” Aeration at this and only this stage is essential for healthy fermentation. Add yeast and yeast nutrient when cooled below 76 degrees F (24.4 C). Ferment at temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees F ((21 and 24 C).

When the mead is clear and fermentation has stopped it is ready to drink and bottle. Wine bottles and corking is the best way to preserve and enhance continued aging in the bottle. Take care not to splash and cause aeration during transfers while bottling.

You can also make a very light beer (like http://www.austinhomebrew.com/Beer/Golden-Ales/AHS-Texas-Blonde-6B.html#.VMH5aSwYGM4) and put a few pounds in the wort while you boil. It's lovely.

Damn even when I'm wearing the heaviest gloves I can find I try not to touch those fuckers when I'm clearing them out. Just hack away with the machete/shovel and try to stay outta the way. Fuck that shit hurts, and even after taking it all out with duct tape it still stings like a motherfucker all day long.

Of course obviously stay away from sharp shit and insects as a rule, but the desert has a way of humbling you with the extreme.

Stay in the shade/covered as much as possible because sunburn is for real and not only does it hurt like a mofo but it'll get infected. Also the sun adds 20 degrees and you can use up to a QT of water an hour out there hiking, which is no joke at 7lb a gal.

Eh they are sorta right. While the water content can sustain you and the taste isn't TERRIBLE (kinda like unripe pears) I've known lots of people that got sick off of it raw. You need to cook it unless you're just fucking around in your backyard - too risky to eat raw while hiking alone in desolate areas.

It won't even hydrate you. You use water to process nutrients and maintain your bodies ph levels so sucking on it will do no good. I think the problem is that no one is showing people using it in an actual survival situation, only in their backyards or surrounded by camera crews. If I were about to die of thirst, I might consider trying certain types, but most would just make me scared of dying both thirsty as hell and sick as hell. I think the people defending it are confusing an extremely short term solution as a catch-all for desert hydration problems.

How about this definition: A source of water that will provide enough water to maintain metabolic processes necessary to sustain life. Now, given that definition, and the knowledge that prickly-pear cladodes and fruits are indeed edible (look at traditional Mexican cuisine, as well as their use in drought conditions for livestock as evidence), then yes, I would consider them an emergency source of water. And not the "I'm in the backyard" type of emergency.

How much water can you imagine would come out of, say, a single paddle of Prickly Pear? I could walk 10ft and have a clear representation of it myself, but the people ITT are talking like they read it out of a book somewhere and have never actually really given it any thought.

Barrel will give you more than most, but I wouldn't want to depend on any of it for long. If you're using cactus to survive and you're more than a day away from anyone, I'd say you use it to give you time to make peace with what's about to happen. I know I would.

I've got a great set of clothes I use that is quite heavy and usually lets me just plow through what most people would walk around. It's too old to have tags, but if I'd have to guess I'd say it's some sort of canvas material. Not much sticks to it, and the only thing I have to watch for is cactus. For hunting I use all three pieces (jacket, vest and overalls) but for general hiking I just use the overalls because they are quite heavy and most times you only have to worry about your calf/ankle area.

Even though borax recrystallizes below 120 degrees (not difficult conditions to achieve), Death Valley's brutal heat prevented even these conditions from being met.
