This. Why are people so hung up about "surviving" in the cold recently? It's not rocket science, you get a tarp to protect from moisture, then a bunch of blankets.

Tarps don't protect from moisture so much. In fact they built up condensation without a radiating heat source like a fire with a reflector to bank off the tarp and keep it dry. It's more used for insulation and protection against rain fall or a strong beating sun.

I'm glad this is still about tarps.

I have a Kelty Noahs tarp 12' and a Kelty range tarp. The range zips up, is good for winter, sleeps two, and folds down to the size of a nalgene.

I also have the Sierra Designs mountain guide tarp. Nothing like chilling with three friends in deep snow with the ability to cook inside. Love the thing.

Yeah I've a 3x3. It's pretty big and has a ton of tieoffs, and is probably the strongest tarp I've ever seen outside of canvas. I've used mine for a groundsheet more than a few times when the ground is mushy. You can't go wrong, although they are on the heavier side.

Well if you're in a sleeping bag, it's harder for them to get in, especially if you have a mosquito net on too (over the entrance to your sleeping bag and your face). Really though, it's not an issue for me as I prefer cold camping.

How is layering mylar blankets useless? They are resistant to water, and layering any type of material has it's use, especially a material which reflects 90% of heat. Carrying 10 can have so many uses other than simply layering up, such as making reflecting surfaces for fire, lining your shelter with, etc...

Mylar blankets are for survival. They allow you to survive a freezing night sitting upright shivering for warmth. They do not allow you to survive a freezing night sleeping.

They work by block wind, evaporation, and reflecting radiant heat. More than one doesn't accomplish anything, since they block all airflow and almost all radiation. What they don't block at all is conduction, which is going to be nearly all of your heat loss when sleeping. Some ultralighters use them to stretch a few more degrees of warmth out of their sleep system, but most people just don't think it's worth the trouble; it's a very small effect.
