What is the point of double bit axes?
Im a yurofag, my family owns several forests and I worked with wood since childhood but never saw one in real life, I just recently realized that this is a thing in the USA.
So what are they good for beside throwing?

Only thinkg I can think of is warfare or not having to sharpen as often.

I prefer the single sided ones, so you can use the back as a maul if need be.

Usually you've either got one half as a felling axe and one half as a splitting axe, or they're both felling profiles and it lets you chop twice as long without sharpening.

Lumberjacks used them because sometimes they had to cut tree roots, or use their axe for something that would dull it.

Henceforth, they used these so they always had one side that was sharp for cutting trees, and the other side for other stuff.

You have one edge with steeper profile for cutting of tree limbs that doesn't dull as easly and one with a lower angle that's sharper for cutting down the tree.
Or you could first take a chop with the sharper edge and then one with the other to remove the chips better.

I think Nessmuk carried a double bit hatchet. One side was for chopping/splitting, the other was very sharp and used for fine carving. He didn't do much woodworking with his knife, and used the hatchet instead.

i was always told the side are sharpened differently one for cutting the tree one for roots but i would imagine everyone has their own ideas

Essentially all of these. One side was sharp with a steep angle, the other wasn't as steep and angle and has more of a grubbing edge to it.

Double bit axes were/are used in the forest industry so that you only have to stop and sharpen your axe when both sides are dull. They tend to be more dangerous and are typically only used by industry and in show events.

Unless you fell trees with an axe for a living, which is highly unlikely, they're not that useful. They do ave two different sharpened edges, as people have said in the thread. They're also more dangerous because of their size, weight, and the fact that both sides are sharpened, so you swing a sharp edge towards you.

At least in North America when people were heading across the country creating the Oregon trail, or other cross country trails, they had a few guys in the front of the wagons called "trailblazers".

They used one side for de-rooting and one side for chopping the tree down, so one side might end up with chips in it ( the de-rooting side) from rocks and was usually a bit duller. Then they kept the other side cleaner and sharper for felling trees.

Where the hell do you get this idea from? Double bit axes are just as safe as using a mattock, bush axe (bank blade), grubbing axe, or even a sledge hammer for that matter. Safety with hand tools is highly dependent on the user.

Yeah, and a sharp knife is more dangerous than a dull knife on top of being much more productive as well. I handle very sharp knives for at least several hours a week between cooking and woodcarving and I still have all my fingers and very little scar tissue on my hands because I'm not an idiot.

Slip with a knife get a nick on your fingers, slip with an axe and lose a few toes. Having two sharp edges swinging thru the air is inherently more dangerous than one. This is really quite a simple idea.
