It's true. Part of the ending procedure of clearing from a claim is to fill in the bedrock with the dirt they used to dig the holes. Planting trees I'm not entirely sure about, but they certainly don't leave it as it is. They're pretty respectable when it comes to cleaning up the mess they cause to get the gold.

Also, OP: If you own anything gold, you're a hypocrite. Even the computer you're using to type that post has some very small gold components in it for conductors. Gold panning and deforesting is a necessary evil for civilization to exist. You may not like it, but that house you're living in that's made from wood is probably sick of your shit too.

Not really. Those guys are the equivalent of what they call "artisanal" miners. They get the easy but low volume stuff that isn't in substantial enough amounts for the big companies (that actually provide the commercial minerals that run the world) to go after. They have a habit of doing horrible things environmentally on the processing side. For example, motherfuckers in Peru will just pour their ore in a bucket of mercury, stomp it around for a bit, take out the gold, then dump that shit in a river

Even if they're not doing retarded shit like that, they're nowhere near necessaries forward modern society to operate. They're basically just rednecks getting what they can for subsistence living. The real minerals that make our lives possible come from the big boy mining companies who have to go through a lot more environmental and bureaucratic red tape in order to operate. Not to say that they don't break the rules from time to time, but at least they're vulnerable to punishment when they do

Yes, major predators can have important effects on trophic systems, but pretending that the reintroduction of a single species will solve and balance everything is naive. I also fail to see how reintroducing wolves has much to do with the destruction of an entire habitat.
