Has anyone on /out/ ever hiked the entire Appalachian trail? I've been thinking it's something I may try sometime next year. Advice? Experiences? Stories?

There are also many of us on here who are interested in completing a thru-hike in the future.

I am gearing up with a buddy of mine. My thread starting as a hammock but as it went on I started to ask questions about it. Would like to know when you are planning it.

Also look up will wood, Terry cole(thru hike outtakes 2014), tuts99 these were great watchs on youtube.

Lot of talk about the AT tonight for whatever reason, guess March is getting pretty close.

Thru-hiked in '14. Best experience I've ever had, too much fun. Feel sad just thinking about it but I'll be out there again this year.

I keep seeing this on /out/, is this actually a thing? I've been camping all around the southern US my whole life (between GA and AR) and I've never seen any hobos let along drug-crazed or murderous hobos.

I started April 15th, so I didn't really get any snow in the spring. It snowed on my third night, but that was it. Got cold at night, but that was kinda to be expected. Had some snow in Maine, but by that point it wasn't really an issue.

Had awesome and incredible weather for the most part, very thankful to whatever weather god had our backs.

I met some weird people that is for sure. Not anyone that made me feel perticularly unsafe except maybe all the drunk drivers I hitched rides to town with in Tennessee.

Met some really fucking cool homeless traveler types early on.

I've always been curious about it. But at this point it's not really possible to take 6 months straight off from life and career to hike 2500 mi. I got bills to pay.

So...for anyone who is off for a year between HS and college or college and employment who is thinking about it, you should just go for it. It may be your last chance until you are 45 and get fired, divorced, and experience a midlife crisis.

Keep being that debt slave anon. I have no clue how anyone who makes more than 40k complain at all. Remove things that you don't need from you life. Granted I choose to live in the second poorest city in the USA due to low cost of living. I make maybe about 30k and have done everything I want. I only work from march-early Dec.

I can also take off those months if I want.

If you draw a 2180 mile line anywhere through the US it'll probably pass through 9 murders in the past 50 years. Especially somewhere with the population density of the central East Coast.

I really, really wouldn't worry about it beyond normal situational awareness.
