Alexander Selkirk. He was marooned on an island for 4 years and lived off the land. He forged a knife out of barrel springs people had left at the island, domesticated feral cats to stop rats from attacking him while he slept, made two houses, hunted goats with his guns, but when his gunpowder dwindled he just ran after the goats and slit their throat. He also made clothing out of their hides and went barefoot on the island since his feet were tough and calloused.

He kept a lot of written journals and recorded a lot of movie footage with a wind-up 8mm camera, if you can find a torrent, check out "Alone in the Wilderness". It's a documentary that's mostly Dick's film footage with someone narrating the film reading exerpts from his journals, pretty amazing stuff.

He'd be mildly satisfied I'd like to think. Though I think the degree to which some Nat'l Parks have turned into tourist resorts (think Yosemite, his stomping ground basically) would bother him a little bit.

He was a real person, but Jeremiah Johnson was a deserter and became a mountain man to escape court martial if I remember correctly.
He was also considered a boogeyman for a while because he actually was a rather ruthless killer. If you didn't do your chores your parents would threaten that"Liver Eatin' Johnson" would come get you.
