I'm trying to make a small chunk of metal sharp as training, but I got problem.
I'm not sure how sharp average knife is supposed to be. I'm slightly running the blade on my hand and it doesn't slice the skin. I can pierce the cardboard via quite strong stabbing...
Is there a reliable and simple method of checking the sharpness? How sharp knife is supposed to perform?

Slide it lightly over your thumbnail.
If it 'digs in', it's good. If it just slides over it, it isn't.
That, the papercut, and looking at the edge are the methods i use. But there isn't a sharp - not sharp line.

Guess I could update.

Made a simple ugly sheath from some old pants. I soaked the denim in fiberglass resin so it is actually fairly rigid. The little bit of wood pops though the handle eye like a button so it can't fall out.

i like the sheath toggle, its a really neat way of securing the knife, better than magnets or snaps

Its to make it look "cooler" as well as a failed seatbelt cutter type of thing. Its kinda sharp on the inside curve.
It was my first knife so its kinda shit.

ah yes, leafspring steal no? one of my favorite materials.

Made these from the same stuff back in the early 00's just after high school. I went though a weebo phase. Though with just my simple small forge I could never get the temper right.

Haven't touched them till now so they are in a sad state.

Hell ya. I cut down several sumac trees with it ~4" diameter each with a hit to each side. (I fucking hate those stinking ass trees. They grow like weeds around here) But if I fucked up and hit it slightly off it would bend slightly and i would have to bend it back.

Most people put the edge of the blade on the back of the nail and just feel for how it bites. It doesn't tell you much about how sharp it is though, much like slicing paper, it won't differentiate between slightly sharp and really sharp. it is useful though to run the entire length of the blade along the edge of your nail as you will feel any imperfections.
