>>459939When I was using a hammock, the pad tucked into a pocket under me and it seemed to work well keeping the heat in on the snowy nights. When I switched to a tent, I had issues with it slipping around under me, but in general it kept me off the cold ground.
I went with one of the Walmart blue pads and cut it down so that it was just barely as big as my torso. I don't remember the final weight. I did keep cutting it down over time.
The pad isn't for comfort as much as it is to insulate your body from the ground. When you lay on your sleeping bag, you flatten it and it does not provide insulation under you.
I don't think you have too many options. Weight and durability are going to over-rule most comfort options.
A lot of people start with blow up mattresses and large sleeping pads. You won't see any of that at the end.
