Dave Canterbury "recommends" you do. He knows his stuff, but he's saying that in the context of a survival situation, or a bushcraft situation where you're processing a lot of wood for the craft. He also suggests you bring a saw for that.

A good hatchet will serve you fine for your purposes. Hell, even a Tomahawk would if you're into that.

Also, your gear should be outfitted for the area you are going into. Meaning you should be able to spend the entire night without a fire to keep you warm. The most you should need a fire for is melting snow for water, boiling water, and/or cooking food. If your gear can't do that for you, you have no business in the Rocky Mountains.

I'd say an axe is necessary but not sufficient. You should also have a decent saw. Then you can saw, split, stack. All you need to do is find one 8" diameter fallen tree and you are set for firewood for the night.

Can you "make a fire to last the night" without an axe. Sure, but it's going to take 10x more time and energy for the same result. Maintaining a fire that is actually capable of keeping you warm in <40F temps is going to be extremely difficult without an axe and saw.

Your clothes and sleeping bag(etc) should be warm enough without a fire. Also, I'm not going on a trip without a knife, but you don't need one. It's just a good tool to bring. Same with my hatchet. But that's just me.

All you need is a Laplander and a camping hatchet. Unless you're making a long fire (that's going to waste all your fuel) you don't need big gear. Remember you only want to fell dead trees if you plan on using a large fuel source. There's absolutely no sense in felling a good living tree. If you can get by on anything that's fallen and dead, you really don't need anything more. Proper technique with a small hatchet can get you through about a 12" circumference without expending too many calories. If you're an idiot and just hacking away at it all willynilly like, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

There's a yootoob video somewhere of an old guy splitting a three foot diameter tree that's about 20 feet long with nothing but a hatchet and some wooden wedges. Cut it straight and was careful about it, he wanted flat surfaces. Took less time than I thought it would, too.

What the hell are you talking about? I can get close to half a liter of boiling water from snow in about 10 minutes on my Mini Trangia. It takes about 10 seconds of preperations. 10 more seconds to add more snow as it melts.

He actually just uploaded a new video. The majority is about batoning and how to avoid it, but he also mentions Mora's oddly enough. Apparently he likes them. More importantly though, at the end of the video at 19:00 he talks about how

Pretty much that. I've been backpacking in the CO back country since I was a kid. I remember a couple of trips where my father brought a folding saw but most of the time, we never needed anything to get good wood for a fire...even in places that saw a lot of traffic (relatively).

The humid-ass piney woods of East Texas are orders of magnitude more difficult with respect to gathering wood for a fire to last the day/night and it can still be done without an axe or saw (but a light machete sure helps reduce the time).

You can just use dead-and-down wood to make your fire. Cutting limbs off trees is a neat skill to have, I guess, but usually, you're just going to end up with a bunch of green wood that won't burn well anyway.

As long as you're not actually in a pay campground (or too far above treeline), there's not a spot in the entire range where you won't find enough dead-and-down sticks and logs to make any size fire that you want. Pic highly related.

As a bonus, you don't have to mangle any trees.
