Modern smartphones charge in around 90 minutes from 2.1amp 5v USB. They can't even accept a charge in the timeframe you've indicated even if you supplied what they needed to. Anyway: A smartphone is a GPS, walkie talkie, camera and flashlight. Having all of those in a single device you can easily keep charged with a modest roll-up solar panel is immensely useful.
As a rule I agree, if there's some alternative that doesn't use electricity, bring that instead. But if you have to bring one, a smartphone makes good sense. Esp. if you're injured and need to call for help, you can give them precise coords where you find you.
