Fishing Tips

I began fishing about a month ago, spending maybe 4 hours on average once a week at a pond and haven't caught a single thing. Tips and tricks for freshwater fishing from the bank of a manmade pond/lake that has sunfish, bass, trout, and catfish? Hoping for some sunfish or trout, but will take anything.
Im using about a 6ft spinning reel rod with 6 lb fluorocarbon.

Switch up the baits you're using if you're not even getting a nibble. I mostly fish for trout and powerbait and nightcrawlers have been more than enough for them

Fish are more active closer to the top of the water when the sun isn't shining directly overhead. Try fishing earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon

You may just have bad luck so keep trying

My rig right now is basically just the line from my rod going to a swivel and then about 1 foot of line before the hook. I have a bobber and a weight right above the swivel. Any advice on that?

Maybe add another foot of line between the swivel and the hook. The fish might be extra jumpy and if the bobber is too close to your bait they might not take it

Fish around rocks or dead trees near the shore. Fish a couple of feet deep, give or take, depending on where the edge of the cover is. You want them to see the bait on their level. Ditch the swivel, use a pencil float and a bit of worm or a piece of corn on a #8 or 10 hook. The pencil float is enough weight to cast a good ways with your setup and the hook is heavy enough to sink corn or worm. You'll catch sunfish if they're there, my 7 year old and 3 year old catch them on 3' rods all day long. Then I use the small ones to catch catfish all night.

I'm a fly fisherman, but back in the day I used those spinners with the brass spoon that look like fish. I'd toss them out well past the spot I wanted to hit and I'd crank them in past the spot.

Even cranking, some slight jerks, will get you strikes. You have to think of fishing as hunting, not just throwing bait and pulling it in and hoping for the best. Try different spots, different speed cranks, different bait.

Work it systematically. Like 10 casts at high speed, 10 casts at medium, 10 casts at low. Then switch spots. Hit all your spots, then switch bait. Rinse and repeat.

If you were fly fishing I'd give you more advice but just stick to that for now.

The bass are going to be very, very hard to catch until mid-late Spring. They tend to hang out at the very bottom and don't eat much, if anything, until the water temperature goes up. It's almost like hibernation but not quite. Dunno about the catfish and sunfish.

For trout you may want to try corn kernels. Apparently that stuff is like crack for trout. I only ever fly fish for trout so I can't help too much for bait, I'm afraid.

(I do know that bass fucking love chartreuse i.e. neon green. Something similar to pic related + decent practice on your part to make it move and jerk like a natural minnow will likely be a killer).

Another thing you might want to look into is where, exactly, you're putting the bait. Most fish like to hide out near cover so they dun get eated by hawks and such. Try to put your lures/bait near weeds, fallen trees, underwater boulders, etc...

forgot to add: put the minnow soft bait on a jig head like in this picture. soft baits have very little or no weight of their own which would make them rather tough to cast. Not only that but they'll uselessly drift/float and look totally unnatural.

Catfish will be at a reasonably warm spot in the water where they can find food. They'll stay where the bottom is warmest. Fish for them with a Carolina rig or a 3 way drop rig in varying depths until you find them. Use cut bait, chicken livers, or worms.

If you're using a Carolina rig, leave a few inches of slack in the line. Some cats will let go of bait if they feel the weight on the line.

I like to use the 3 way rig and hooks no larger than 1/0 (and usually a little bit smaller than that, I have had my best luck with a #1). Fish a foot or 18 inches above your weight. That means the leader between the 3 way swivel and the sinker should be 12 to 20 inches long. Make that section of line lighter test than your main line, too. If anything hangs, it's most likely going to be the weight. Lighter line between swivel and weight lets you keep the swivel and hook if the weight becomes irretrievably hung.

next, dont use flouro as your casting line. it has too much memory and will knot up easier. just use mono and if you feel like the fish are really that flakey, splice in a short leader of flouro

This. Too many people will use a small assortment of bait/lures and complain about getting nothing. It's all trial and error, if the fish are there they will bite on something.
What's the environment like that you're fishing in? Right now I'm sitting on nearly three feet of ice, and the fish are all sluggish, not very aggressive at all, except northerns, but spearing season ended yesterday.

If you're just fishing a pond then tightline a perch rig with some crawlers. Try spinners for the trout and tubes for the bass. Sunfish, bass, and catfish will all hit the crawlers, though.

Catfish are incredibly easy to catch. Hook, 12lb line, weights, and chicken livers. Cast out, prop up rod, leave the bail open. When line starts to run, give it a few runs than close the bail and set the hook.

Alternatively: use Carolina rig, leave some slack, set bait clicker if you don't happen to be using a spinning reel. Or use Carolina rig, leave some slack, close the bail, put a bell on the rod tip because they tend to bite best at 2 fucking 30 AM, drink a few beers, and let the bell wake you up if you doze.

Glad this thread is around.

If anyone would be willing to help me get a trout setup started, I would be very grateful!

I started hunting small game hunting again this year. I want to get back into fishing. This will be a complete fresh start.

Currently, no tackle, no rod, no reel. Nothing.
I mostly will be fishing river trout, with the occasional bass, etc. What would be a good starting point for this? I should probably also mention, it won't be a fly rod.

Spinners are good most of the time. You can also float spawn in deeper holes/rivers. With that my set up is spawn sac on a treble hook with a 3 foot leader...smaller test than your line. Line needs to be thinner and tied directly to the hook. No swivels. You must adjust this based on water depth. That's all up to you.

Line---float---leader---hook/spawn--with split shot weights about every 10 inches to keep the line straight as it floats down river.

Mastering your drag is the most important thing if you're going for larger fish.

You're always going to lose gear. Fishing is not a cheap thing to get into. Your best bet is to just be familiar with every obstruction where you're fishing. Compensate accordingly for every fallen branch or rock that you could get snagged up on. Apart from that the speed at which you retrieve your lure will keep it off the bottom. That's for spinners and spoons, though. If you're floating spawn I'd recommend making the leader shorter, but you're more likely to catch fish with the spawn closer to the bottom. If you know there are fish in a certain spot, can't get to it because of branches, and the water isn't too deep you could go in before season and clear some of that shit out of the way.

You found it because the guy who bought it couldn't catch shit with it either. That's because synthetic bait is shit. Use stuff that actually was alive in the recent past and still has some liquid blood in it.
