>>468727Eagle Scout here. (Just turned into one). Might as well sum up my experience in scouting.
Looking over my scouting life, I guess the mixed answers here are kinda baffling to me. I'd be lying if I said I'm speaking for everyone, cause I feel like it's different for everyone.
Within my troop, my dad certainly hated the way things ran a couple years ago. If you guys saw it, you'd probably cringe too.
Guys coming to meetings out of uniform, lack of participation, and most notably, annoying douchebags [mostly white (this was mostly an asian/white troop)].
We did have a good amount of religious folk, but overzealousness was rare, almost non-existant, so that's a plus.
My dad became Scoutmaster, since the last one finished his term and no one else would step up. Those 3 years were the best for our troop. Here's a list:
-Fixed our Troop's discipline IMMENSELY.
-We had a camping trip almost once every month. Kept participation high.
-Created the Honorguard, which is the best of the best in our troop. We were the most disciplined of our troop, since we followed Flag Ceremony guidelines similar to JROTC.
Three years later, my dad quits since:
a.Needed to go back into business, since our budget started dropping.
b.Got stabbed in the back by his friend, who had convinced several other parents with positions that my dad was a terrible leader (Will post story later).
All in all, after that, things slowed down greatly, especially when Junior year rolled in for me and my friends in the troop.
