I live in Michigan. I want to go innawoods, shoot small game, chop down trees, eat dem fish and generally mind my own fucking business without having to worry about really running into anyone. Any legality issues i should be aware of other than needing a fishing and small game license? Also, what are good areas for this in Michigan? Without having to go to the upper peninsula and dealing with all the fucked up wierd neo Amish sheep rapists.

I'd imagine wandering onto private property would be an issue. The onus is always on you to know.

I've never even been to Michigan but from what I gather, you won't find much opportunity south of the UP.

As a yooper, I can confirm. Lower Michigan is shit tier. I've been living here for around four years now. The Upper Peninsula is nearly boreal in some areas. So if you're willing to put up with hippies, drunks, and nine months of winter, it's a god send.

Places around Houghton and Marquette are fairly civilized, but large towns are few and far between. The Keweenaw Peninsula is incredibly gorgeous and there is a rich mining and logging history surrounding the communities. I often wander upon abandoned houses and old industrial buildings that serve no practical purpose anymore. It's some stalker level shit in some areas.

There is a ton of natural beauty here, but it's all about weighing the pros and cons. For me, it snows far too much and the winter is too cold to want to be outside. Temperatures often dip down into the negatives, excluding wind chill, and can range from -10 to -40 at times. The lack of sunlight causes depression in nearly everyone and no one seems as friendly as they would be in the warmer months.

Other than that, the Upper Peninsula in late spring, summer, and early fall is 10/10 for /out/. Pic related; wandering through the woods near a private lake a couple months back.

UP resident here. I hate the cold with a passion; I get cold extremely easy. Cold is easy to overcome if you're prepared for it. There is no comparison between downstate and up north for /out/ activities. If you get a place bordering a national forest and know how to hunt/fish/trap/garden/chickens, basically be a creative badass, there is no reason you can't "live off the land". You can't go chopping trees you don't own though. If you want to heat with wood you'll need barter/buy or have enough property. You'll need a snowmobile to get around in winter. There are some kind of neat /out/ things to do in the LP. There are some nice day hikes in the Irish Hills, and a lot of uninhabited land between Grayling and Alpena. In fact, there's a national forest over there. The UP is certainly way more wild, though.

Northern lower peninsula native here. Admittedly, everything bellow traverse city sort goes downhill, but, northern Michigan is fucking great. The east Jordan river valley is one of my main stomping grounds. It's pretty easy to find privacy there in what is a relatively large area. I've camped in Empire on the sleeping bear dunes overlooking Lake Michigan, I've also camped on undeveloped parts of Lake Michigan near charleviox. Then Theres north manitou island, the north country trail, and the coast to coast trail from lake Michigan to lake Erie. I mean fuck. It's a buffet.

Just find some state land nigga. Have at it.
