/out/, how many of you have used the the milsurp Modular Sleeping System?

My buddy is in the Reserves and letting me use his for a weekend hike. Comes with a 'patrol bag', rated to 30 degrees F, and an 'intermediate bag' with says it can go down to -30. Also comes with a camo GoreTex bivy sack.

It all snaps together to combine into one 11 pound monstrosity, but it seems pretty nifty for the weight. My main complaint with sleeping bags has always been dealing with the fucking zippers and my liner moving around, this has heavy duty zippers and it is very secure.

Anyone used this while /out/? Pic related.

If you have it on hand I'd be curious to know what each component weighs.
Most of us could probably do without the intermediate bag, most of the time, right?
Cut that out and it might not be *terribly* heavy.

Looking online the danger with these appears to be accidentally buying one that was abused to shreds.

Also, it appears the US military has a new generation of sleep system. Possibly it is significantly better?
(Though, presumably still much heavier than you want for the money.)

I'm in the USMC. We're issued a shitty 3 season bag with a bivy. The bivy is still good, probably an upgrade considering it adds a mosquito net, but the bag is SHIT. Yeah, it's lighter, but the thing freezes your balls off under 50 degrees. I distinctly remember being in MCT and using this damn thing INDOORS in the cold and still shivering .

Overall I'll take the old version if it's gonna get below 50.

The bivy is definitely solid. No complaints there. But really, it works best with a bag that has the snaps sewn on, that's one of the best parts of the system.

Its plenty warm with both bags. Only need the thinner one. The trick is to nest and snap them all together and roll it all up as one and then the stuff sack. Doesn't do shit for mosquitoes so you sleep with a clean tshirt on your face. The big thing about field missions is keeping your gear dry because its going to get rained on, and its going to rain at night.

If its summer you either leave the heavier bag or set it up as padding underneath you (still snapped and inside the bivy. Just remember the 550 cord for your tarp or life is going to be pain.

My experience with the 3-season sleep system has been a bit peculiar.

Inside my room in chilly nights, I found that my feet were cold and prone to sweating (not cute).

Actually being in the wilderness in temperatures around 30f wasn't so bad. In fact, I would have called it snug.

That being said, I also retained most of my layers for that. The bivvy it comes with is pretty cool, especially with that face net, but I found it incredibly constricting. This may be because I elected to bring my boots in with me.

Got one and used it at Nuggetfest back in January in 3 days of freezing rain. Works pretty good, but the weight and bulk makes it a bitch for most hiking I'd think. Happen to have a second patrol layer that rolls up small and light. I'd use it for most other camping.

I'm in the army and got to use it a few times. It's very warm. The outer shell is useful for protecting against heavy dew. I'd highly recommend it so long as you can handle the weight. It gets to be pretty small with the case, so that isn't much of an issue.

seriously, where are you guys pulling this from? I have one, it's just under 9 pounds. I swapped out the compression sack for a granite gear one, but the compression sack it comes with is about half a pound.

I used this system to bivouac on a winter climb of a 14er. We camped in a 3-sided structure at 11,000ft.

It was adequate, though I am sure better setups exist. My main complaints were, that the flap which folds over the face has very little support, and the overall length of the bag, which was too short for me (I'm 6'4"). With the face flap closed, ice would form and touch my face. I would awaken and open the flap, and enjoy more room, but when I next awoke, I'd be quite cold. This cycle continued all night.

Another issue, is that the zippers are all on the same side. This side seemed to let more cold in. It helped to lay on that side, so my sleeping pad provided insulation, but the snaps made this uncomfortable.

Overall, the night could've been worse. I wasn't even in my snowpants in the sleeping bag. In the summer, I can see insects being an issue.

I actually just used this system the last 2 nights. Was at the peak of a smallerish mountain in about a foot of snow and it got down to 0 pretty quick with decent wind when the sun went down. It is heavy as fuck with all 3 layers and really sucked lugging up there, but it did a pretty decent job of keeping me warm when i was sleeping. Aside from the weight it is pretty damn good for the cost.

Just got done with a field ex in Shelby with this. Id wear long johns and a thermal undershirt on the 40 degree nights, and at one point it got to like 22 with torrential rain (i dont know man, mississippi...) and i had a hoodie and sweats with the full 3 part set up, and I'd wake up with my balls sweating. I'd trust it. It is big and heavy though.

It's sort of true, but that's not why.
The truth is you should be as clothed as you can be without compressing insulation.
You should never bring your boots in with you though. that's just a good way to get your bag muddy, and stay cold.

The bivvy would be worthwhile if you're sleeping under a tarp. You DON'T need all three bags at the same time, unless it's 0F and windy and you're under an open tarp. The black bag is VERY warm.

I'm in the Canadian Army so ours are probably a little heavier than most, but it's 10lbs max.

I've used it in unheated tents at -20*C and was sweating my balls off when I woke up.

I often sleep in between the layers of the inner and outer bag, with the bivvy on top. (most of the time on a cot)

IMO if you can get one cheap you can't go wrong if you can handle the weight. Plus the bivvy is a god send, keeps your bag dry if you have to set up on wet ground and keeps you dry too.

PS:Bbe careful if you stick your head in side the bivvy bag, I've almost killed my self a few times because I rolled in my sleep.
