Sup /out/, I'm looking to upgrade from a synthetic mummy bag to a down quilt. I'm looking at the Hammock Gear Burrow 20 and the Enlightened Equipment Revelation. Anyone have experience with these and are there other brands in the same price range that I should check out? For reference:

I own a revelation 20F, long, wide, 30D outer. it's great and comfy for me down to 20F with long underwear, a knit cap, and xtherm underneath.

if I were to buy again, I'd probably be ok with a 15D outer, and consider going with 15F of stuffing instead of the long size. in practice, it's hard to wrap it over my head, and I'd rather have that extra bit of down over my chest.

Maybe one day. I'd definitely need to start on a smaller project though since I haven't sewn anything since like seventh grade. I am currently learning to knit and it's pretty fun.

To be honest, basic underquilts are pretty simple. Just a big quilted rectangle. You can add complexity to design without going too out there. Pic related is the first underquilt I made and was, well, a bit quilted rectangle. If I'd added some drawstrings to the ends to close them off when it was actually slung under the hammock then it would have been actually decent I think, but the fill was poor quality and the material used wasn't great either so I opted to make a second one about a year later I think which turned out a lot better.

Nicely done. Have you attempted a top quilt as well? I'm assuming a top quilt has more fill power since that's your primary source of warmth. The whole reason I'm looking into quilts is I tried my friend's and loved it. I was set on saving up for a Western Mountaineering bag but a quilt seems so much more versatile.

I've a regular sleeping bag. I'm considering removing the fill from the underside though, but I'm hesitant. My new underquilt, pic related, is far better than the old one.

Now the wheels are turning for a top-quilt... With an integrated sleeve so that, if I were using a tent instead of a hammock, my sleeping mat would slide into it and would keep everything nice and sealed in.

Very nice! Basically I figure $250 or so isn't that bad for a high quality top quilt considering most traditional down sleeping bags go for like $200 more than that. Plus I'm not really a fan of mummy bags.

If you use synthetic insulation, it's literally as simple as cutting three pieces of material to the same size, pinning them together, running the perimeter through a sewing machine, and turning it inside out. Plus, it's very cheap to make your own stuff.

You're probably right. I would imagine you'd want a mummy bag for extreme temps like that. The quilt appeals to me since I'm a spring through fall camping kind of guy. Winter camping holds no appeal for me.

Any of the fill which is completely compressed provides negligible benefits, making it basically extra weight for no gain. There is then of course the fact that your fill might not be completely compressed and that area where you remove down might become "exposed" when you move about so had there been any fill in that particular part of the quilt/bag then it would become uncompressed and serve to still provide insulation.

Yeah. Sleeping bags can be a bit too stuffy during the warm season.
I mainly camp either during winter or summer and in the summer I don't feel the need to use anything except something for the occasional rain.

The way I made my underquilt (the second one) might help for designing the shape of any piece of equipment like this. Get a sheet of cheap cloth (Like a mattress cover or something) and try and make the vague shape of that around yourself. With the UQ I hung the sheet underneath my hammock and then, with the help of the missus, fitted it to the shape of the hammock with my laying in it and used this as the template for the final product. You could do this with a duvet cover. Get a cheapy single-bed duvet cover, climb insider and then using safety pins enclose yourself in it until it's as tight as possible without being uncomfortable. Then use this as the pattern for the actual sleeping bag or top quilt.

So I'm thinking about the top-quilt idea. I was thinking of having the bit you actually lay on to be made out of microfleece, but we're talking 220g for that fleece part which seems excessive considering that it's not providing any real insulation. I just wanted it there because it'd be more comfortable to lay on a bit of fleece than to lay on so super-thin sheet of crap.

Any alternative suggestions for something comfortable like fleece with less weight?

Haha I did actually buy a nice military surplus wool blanket to replace the cheap comforter that I had. It's kept me plenty warm.
