Duct tape can make EXCELLENT tinder.

You basically tear it along it's length into threads as small as possible (knives definitely help this process) and make a small, loose bundle with the threads once complete. Can also infuse it with other dry tinder. Catches a spark very well too.

Here's a good walk through video. I was looking on YouTube for someone else that's done it and the first one that shows up just basically has the worst technique/setup imaginable. But Dave's video is spot on.

I had one; I never had that issue. I usually thoroughly clean my cookware prior to use, though. Now I only use stainless, just by chance not by design, but I've never found that to be true for stainless or aluminum mess kits. I bought my first mess kit (aluminum) from REI; army/navy surplus usually have used ones for a great price. I have an aluminum canteen from the Korean War (1951) and it still works and functions great; no metallic taste either, very light.

why should I need consumable duct tape when I have plenty of natural materials like:
lime and willow bark, stinging nettle, spruce roots and resin?
I don't really like to be dependent on some kind of gear.

Had another buddy bring a few gallons of water, we ducttaped the hose where it split, filled radiator up and drove it 6-7 miles home

Worked pretty well, I keep some in my truck

Holy fuck do I love duct tape. It's nice and strong, but not super expensive. It comes in all sorts of colors, even camo. It can make and fix just about anything. Literally. You can make shoes, shelters, boats, ropes, pretty much anything out of this shit.

I use tape for hammock camping. When I tie the hammock to the tree, I wrap duct tape (sticky side out) several times around the tree above and below the hammock line in order to prevent things like ants or spiders from crawling down or up the tree and onto my hammock.

i would recommend to prepare to have more money. the initial price may be low but maintenance costs, fixing it etc cost money
and if you're buying a 500$ it may need work, i would take it to get checked out by a certified technician.

i was a bit naive, i bought a newer, more expensive bike then dropped it :/
the cheaper, beater bike is the way to go

I got the idea from my city's landscaping department. In order to keep pest larvae from burrowing into the lower trucks of trees or nesting swarms of caterpillars from eating the leaves, they wrap bands of black sticky tape around the truck. It captures any bugs that may try to crawl up the tree.

Well, the $500 is just my initial price for the bike. I'm aware it'll probably need work, but it'll be my first bike I figured a beater will be good. I plan on working on it myself so I'm familiar with it if I need to do repairs on the road. I figure that's half the adventure though, right? Plus I'm also on that super poor college student budget myself, so I'm looking to keep costs low.

Anyway, I'm interested in seeeing/hearing more about that camelback. I'm in the market for a new one, or at the very least a new bladder for my old one, so I'm interested in seeing what you're doing.
