I picked up a few cheap things over Christmas because I got a gift card to Amazon.
'The Complete Walker' by Colin Fletcher - this is a little out-dated now (written in the late 1960s), but it's pretty much THE book that is responsible for why we do what we do with our modern backpacking gear.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0394420004/Platypus water bladders - you can never have too many of these.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J2KEGY/http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VNXWPK/Long handled spoon - Eating cook-in-bag meals with a short spork has always annoyed me. This should keep my hands a little more clean and make the whole process less frustrating.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J1BV01C/Sawyer Mini Filtration System - I have always used Aqua Mira because it is much lighter and more effective than most filters, but I will be testing this filter out this summer. A problem with Aqua Mira is that the bottles sometimes leak, and aside from putting you in a pinch on the trail, the chemicals are very bad for silicone-coated nylon, essentially dissolving it instantly. The filter only weighs 2 ounces, has a very long lifespan (100,000 gallons is basically forever if you are just using it for yourself), and you can use it like a LifeStraw to drink directly out of a water source or screw it directly onto many water bottles.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FA2RLX2/'The Ultimate Hiker's Guide' by Andrew Skurka - This is the modern guide to backpacking gear philosophy by a professional hiker, descended directly from the Colin Fletcher school of thought. Most ultralight backpackers wish they were this hard. If you don't know who Andrew Skurka is, then Google him now and start reading his blog. This guy is the real deal.
