Knot thread.

I don't know shit about knots, so I've decided I'm going to practice tying them a little bit each day.

What do you consider the most important knots to know?

I've just been trying to do a sheepshank but realized it is a troll, it isn't possible to tie.
(Not serious, but I feel like I either need an extra hand or heavier cord, here.)

I don't know the english names, but the ones I use are:
19 is useful to make a fixed ring
57,56 need no explaning
59 is 57 btw
45 connects two edges
20 for when it is time

A bowline, especially when combined with the use of toggle can be very useful is situations when you know you'll have to undo your knots, which is almost every time you tie knots. No. 42 is also very useful although I've never seen anyone to recommend it. By the way don't think something Ray Mears or any other expert recommends is the only way to go. If you find a particular knot too difficult to tie, use something else.

A knot for tying fishing line (like UNI knot) and another for climbing ropes (figure eight follow through) are good to know even if you never need them.

Don't try to learn too many knots so that when you need one, you can't remember any.

It can be done but its not something you would use very much. Have never used one in a legit situation yet.

search for "how to tie knots" on app store or whatever you have, there are animated knots that show how to do them, and a quick background and what they're good for.
the app is for free and you start with just a few, so you have to download others seperatly.
i highly recommend these to people who want to learn how to tie knots, its step for step, and there are no hands in the way, and since its animated its easier to follow than pictures

Look online for knots . sailing websites should habey a tony of well organized material - sailors know their knots as they come in really handy on boats.

sheepshank needs constant pressure on both ends

the only time I've ever used it was at a scout jamboree to put up 3 patrol tents with only like 2 feet between each

Your sheep shank is best tied with pic related or climbing rope. The key is that the rope has to conduct friction against its self or else it will fall apart. I remember the first time I tied it and it kept slipping apart with synthetic rope. It's kind of a gimmick because to keep the knot together requires constant tension. So if you were in a situation that you needed to shorten your rope and didn't want to cut it and it was for holding up a tarp? I dunno.

Most important knots I can think of are:

Square knot (joining knot for joining rope of equal size)
Two half hitches (for loops that need to be tight)
Taut line hitch (For loops that need to hold lines tight)
Bowline (For loops that need to stay put, can be tied one handed "rescue knot")
Clove hitch (for starting lashings, tying around logs/large sticks)

These are the top 5 I use. Also useful:

Timber hitch (for wrapping around logs)
Figure 8 (follow through)
Sheetbend (for joining rope of unequal size)
I used to know more, but it's been years since I got out of scouts.

Half a sheepshank is the start of a wagoneer's hitch, that's the only use I've ever found for it.

Animated Knots says the alpine butterfly loop is better if you can remember how to tie one. I've used chain sinnets too but not under heavy load

Depends on the knot. A figure 8 or bowline is fairly easy, but I don't think I could have figured out the lanyard knot from the end result.

Two half hitches, jam knots (I think I use the Canadian jam knot, but I'm not sure), and taut-line hitches work for 99% of my needs. Throw in the occasional prusik, and I'm good to go.
