Kukri vs. Axe

Weigh in guys.

I use kukris for brush clearing, batoning, whittling and shaping wood, and I guess I could fuck up an axeman in a 1v1. I find camp axes unwieldy, heavier, less versatile, and more dangerous for certain tasks.

I've had a moderately-priced Kabar kukri for years, in 1095 steel. It's a nearly perfect tool.

What do you guys think?

If I were in the habit of cutting down trees when /out/ I would get a fucking chainsaw. Failing that, one of those bigass saws and a buddy. As a last resort, a bigass Axe that probably weighs 8-10lbs.

Fortunately, I don't find myself felling massive trees.

Anything thinner than my forearm is easy work though. It's thin so it bites in deeply, and efficiently dissects shit.

Kukri pros:
-Easier to sharpen
-More balanced
-You look like a dickhead

Axe pros:
-More force exerted
-More unbalanced
-Easier to repair
-Useable when dull
-Useable as a hammer

If someone had even moderate training in wielding an axe, ala they knew to hold the axe at the bottom of the head (facing down) they would beat you, it's almost the equivalent of 2 weapons when used properly

Axe I'm not sure. I spent $215 on my kukri but I also collect knives and bought a very very very nice kukri. Pretty sure you can get good enough ones for like $60-$70 dollars

If it's a proper hatchet (not Fiskars) the blade profile is very thin, there's no much difference. As for cutting power, a hatchet wins.

I can't imagine a situation in which long bladed kukri would be safer to use than an axe. Sure a kukri is better for whittling, but then again, who really goes /out/ without a knife. Similarly a kukri would be better in jungle for clearing the path, but then there are things called machete and parang.

Kukri is a fine weapon. If something lighter than an axe is needed, a strong knife suitable for batoning is a better option.

Yeah well I've studied NNW martial arts for 302 years. But srs he means that if you hold and axe with the bottom of your hand at the head you can use the shaft as a weapon too. It just means that the blade/flat edge of the hammer comes a close quarters weapon.
