I live and camp out in south florida and was seriously thinking of getting a good jungle hammock, but the problem is finding a good pair of trees, its actually quite rare at most campsites I've been to, you either have giant oaks that are over 100' apart or shitton of skinny pines that are 5-10' apart and have that paper-like bark that sheds with just the slightest friction.

it just makes it a lot more work when trying to find a site to camp at because with tent camping you can set down nearly anywhere since the state is so flat.

This is where the hammock fags just don't get it. Hammocks are NOT equivalent to a tent - not even close. Can you put a canoe load of gear in a hammock to get it in out of the rain? Can you cook in a hammock? Can you fuck doggy style in a hammock? I've done all three of these THIS YEAR in my tent and I'm sure that I could come up with a dozen more ways that a tent is superior to a hammock.

Yes, you can sleep in a hammock but that's pretty much it..

Hammocks are great if you only camp in places where they can be used. I accept that my tent is moderately heavier, and possibly slightly less comfortable (though when I'm camping I'm almost always quite tired) but I appreciate using it in prairie, desert, taiga and anywhere else without appropriately spaced trees of appropriate size.

And yes, I do find myself in this type of terrain fairly frequently.

In my original post, I was replying to someone that said hammocks are "functionally equivalent" to tents and I gave 3 simple examples to back up the reality that they are not. The whiny little butthurt bitch that replied to MY comment apparently wanted to prove me wrong but actually did the exact opposite and in the process showed that OP was also correct. (muh hammock!!)

As I said before, hammocks do have their limited use, you CAN sleep (uncomfortably) in one but they are in no way functionally equivalent to a tent.

Then this morning, I noticed that a lot of these posts were made at a time of day that made it unlikely they originated from the US...

So let's review

In a hammock you can:
1) sleep
2) jerk off

I've already mentioned that in a tent you can:
1) Store a large amount of gear to protect it from the elements.
2) Cook inside to keep from having to do so in the rain
3) Fuck doggy style

I mentioned that I had done all these things on a camping trip this year but here's a few more things that occurred on that same outing that would be impossible in a hammock.

Another couple was with us and when we saw that the rain wasn't gonna stop that day we:

4) Crawled into the same tent to visit for a while
5) Sat in a circle and passed around the water pipe
6) Played the ukelele & harmonica & sang
7) The girls did yoga in one tent while my friend and I played cards in the other.
8) Had a group dinner inside the tent.

None of these things would be possible IN a hammock.

A hammock is functionally equivalent to a sleeping bag (you can sleep in it)

A tent is functionally equivalent to a house (you can LIVE in it)

Same dude here. I just got my hammock in the mail from Amazon today. Easily ranks up there with the best $30 camping investment I've made in a while. I'd also like to state that I have a single person 4-season tent and a two person 4-season tent. I live in Hawaii, so the hammock is preferential at this point in time. I am leaving on a six day deep jungle hike and will be using this hammock + tarp and pretty pumped to try it out.

It's not rocket science, but the most complaints people have with hammocks come from them sleeping in them wrong.
If you don't already have them, get or make some hammock straps. you can make some for about 10 bucks if you have a harbor freight locally, or just have somewhere with a cheap source of good polyester straps.

Guaranteed there will be mosquitos. The other one is Cane Spiders. I'm not particularly interested in sleeping with a few. They are the size of small dogs. No fucking joke. Lastly, the netting will repel any dirty hippies from entering. If anyone is interested, I'm hiking the Na Pali Coast along the Kalalau Trail on the Island of Kauai on the 20th.

I was gonna mention carabiners, but I didn't because I wasn't sure if you were gonna wanna spend the extra couple bucks for them.
paracord isn't great for it. it'll work, but it's not great for the trees because it doesn't evenly distribute the weight as well.

Thanks for the tip. I'd have to order that stuff in, and find a sewing machine. At this point in time, it's not time-practical. The trees are pretty hard here, and if I see that my setup is causing damage, I'll use some more paracord and make additional straps to distribute my body weight.

Hawai'i is gorgeous, but not so great for a lot of /out/ stuff, at least on Oahu. Like, if you're a backpacker or hunter, you're SOL. Dayhikes, surfing, etc. are great though.

There are still places on the island where you can hike for a day and camp and be the only people. A lot of it is pretty dangerous to access. Matter of fact, two people went missing on the same trail a few days a part from each other. Their bodies haven't been found yet and it's going on seven days and nine days respectively. People are always dying or needed search and rescue because they underestimate the hikes here. It's hot, humid, steep and if you fall off a ridge you will tumble forever through dense bushes and trees. Hmmm. Maybe I'll start a thread about this hike I'm going on...I'm sure some people would be interested.

I once lived way on the backside of Tripler. Across the street, the "wilderness" of the island started, with a paved path leading to some Army listening post or something and then a trail going northeast, apparently it connects to the backside of the Stairway. I always wanted to hike it, but I never got my shit together to do it before I moved. If anyone's done it and can confirm, I'd love to hear about it.

I've done the stairway, in torrential rain. There is constant land disputes on who owns the actual stairway, so as the state squabbles over it, the tax payer has been paying for an on duty security guard at the trail entrance for years to turn hikers away.

When my friends and I did it, the weather was not optimal and we took an alternative entrance to bypass the security guard and hiked the stairs in broad day light. It's extremely steep and one could easily slip and fall to their death. If I were to do it again, I'd probably wear a climbing harness and gloves.

Actually the two people I mentioned above who went missing were on the stairway. Imma start a thread over the next day or so about this Na Pali Coast hike. People die on that one too.
