yes, they do make special ultralight tents, but I'm not aware of any that turn into backpacks. ultralight tents often tend to be retardedly expensive affairs, though, so I avoid them.
my personal stuff: I use a 35L high sierra internal frame backpack, and use it to carry an el cheapo Coleman 2 man tent, sleeping bag, and all my other /out/ stuff. the backpack is bigger than what you'd take to school, but its still just a backpack, and the tent is a $30 POS from Walmart...
