I want to eat some tasty squirrels and knock cans n shit around in the woods. There are some nearby houses that wouldn't appreciate gunfire.

whats the best air rifle for squirrels? pref bigger than .177, i want to kill it not hurt it.
On a side note, would you recommend going to the trouble for a hunting license? I'm not normally one to break the law but all I want to bag is squirrels. Not sure if I want 12 hours of gun safety and hunting regulation education just to fuck around with an air gun.

I'd use a good quality .177.

A cheap .22 is just a barrel change for the sake of idiot consumers who think it's larger and therefore more powerful. Without more power in the gun it actually means a heavier, slower moving projectile.

As long as you don't live in Canada a .22 cal air rifle should be fine. In Canada most air rifles are limited 495fps and due to our firearms laws anything over that is considered a firearm so most would just get a gun. I have killed squirells with 495fps but if you don't get good shot placement then its now humane

tldr: As long as the air rifle is like 750fps +

I believe the picture you posted is a Crossman Quest 1000. I've killed plenty of squirrels with mine. Never piss off the neighbors and have yet to cause needless suffering amongst the rodent population. When I first bought the Crossman I had doubts about it's 'stopping power'. Trust me, it's a squirrel slaying machine.

I've got a friend with a single shot bolt action that ca shoot 22LR, 22 long and 22 short. The shorts are about as quiet as an air rifle

Not that that's a bad thing, but you can hunt them with less, I did the maths and my .22 rifle is about 580fps and I hunt squirrels and rabbits with it absolutely no problem.

The break barrel mechanism is more prone to breaking or generally wearing and giving you issues.

Also generally a pain to use, and more or less impossible to deliver follow up shots. It's much easier to just ready your next shot by operating a bolt/lever than having to break your barrel and manually feed in the next pellet. At that point you've most likely scared off whatever you're trying to hit if you missed it.

This difference between calibres is well known. .22 is harder to shoot because of the curved trajectory. .177 is faster and flatter and can go straight through rabbits / squirrels. In Scouts we used to say .177 for feather - .22 for fur.

Look at it in terms of F = ma where F is the force delivered by the rifle, m is the mass of the mechanism and pellet, and a is the acceleration of the pellet.

The assuming you use the same rifle, the mechanism doesn't change and so F remains constant.

Because you add to 'm' by using a heavier pellet, as a result 'a' has to become less. So basically, the .22 does move slower, but because of the higher mass it carries just as much energy, so it doesn't really matter in terms of power if you use a .22 or .177, they have their own behaviours in terms of trajectory, but energy remains more or less the same.

The brick would hit harder - but it wouldn't go as far and I'd need a huge curved trajectory to get it as far as I could.

There's a pay off with extra weight.

Well yeah of course but using an air rifle, you're usually not firing much further than 50 yards tops, in such range you don't really need to worry too much about trajectory, and if you do just get a mil-dot sight. I run a .22 zeroed to 23 yards, but at max zoom I've got an effective range of 60 yards with a very small mil-dot optic, a conventional mil-dot scope would probably push that range out to 100 yards.

It sounds as though you're struggling with your own equation. If weight of the pellet is a variable - the outcome (energy delivered) must surely change? Where are the autismo math geniuses when we need them?

Given two equal rifles, only chambered differently, the energy in a .177 and .22 pellet will be very different.

a .177 12ft/lb rifle would, while slower, transfer much more than 12ft/lb of energy into a .22 pellet due to better efficiency.

My UK legal .22 rifle (weaker than what you can get in the US) is able to go straight through a rabbits skull, so the equivalent power .177 would most likely deliver less energy. Talking about the same issue, since .22 rifles are shooting slower (sub sonic and very quiet usually) but heavier rounds. They're not shooting much slower though, despite the increase in weight. The .177 will do the job, but shot placement is more important. They're very resilient creatures. I shot one with a bow in the gut and I had to kill him with a club because he wasn't dying even with an arrow through him keeping him from running away.

Bingo, less penetration usually means more internal trauma, and if in both cases you're penetrating all the way through, you might as well use a round that makes a bigger hole.

And I know what you mean about shot placement, I usually aim for the headshot so it's almost always an instantaneous kill, but I've never tried a lung/heart shot before, I assume that's what you were going for with the bow?

I remember being told at scouts (where we only ever used .177),that in rifles putting out less than 12ft/lb - .177 was the preferred calibre for accuracy and that .22s needed a lot of dialing in for range at that power.

National forests/wildernesses or BLM land allow target shooting, but you would be better checking with the ranger office at the location you are interested in, because any of the above three can implement temporary or regional restrictions for various reasons.

I believe also some areas will allow rifles for use in hunting, but idle target shooting is prohibited.

No, I'm saying if you took a .177 rifle, that shoots a given .177 pellet at 12ft/lb and put a .22 barrel on it, it would shoot a .22 pellet with more KE than 12ft/lb.

Spring guns are nice, but to get a real accurate one, it needs to be heavy, so carrying it around and aiming without a rest is difficult.

Air rifles are fun man. And so much cheaper than regular rifles. I always used .22 and my mate always went for .177 but I guess it's really just whatever floats your boat. At the range you'll be using an air rifle at the trajectory and air resistance barely comes into it.

As the owner of a Gamo rifle, I can confirm this. They're decent rifles for the price, but then you get what you pay for. My BSA T-10 hadn't been cleaned in years and still shot perfect every time, my dad's Gamo Hunter is a bit temperamental.

Even a regular .22lr out of a bolt or lever rifle with a decently long barrel will be quiet enough not to make your ears ring. Still louder than a pellet gun but not that bad.

When I was a kid my grandpa and I used to shoot squirrels with his .22 and not wear (or need) earpro. I know it sounds crazy but it was a bolt rifle with a ~18" barrel and it wasn't loud enough to make even my kid ears ring. It was about as loud as a cap gun.

Just because the initial launching energy was the same, doesn't mean the impact energy will be the same. You have wind, humidity, air resistance, all these other factors that slow a projectile down that are not taken into account in a high school physics class.

At the end of the day the person who has real life field experience hunting will pellet guns will give you the best answer. You can bench race all you want but when one car crosses the finish line before the other then that's the end of it.

In general, a .22 will kill things moar dedder than a .177. You kill small animals with impact shock as much as you do with actually piercing vital organs. .22 pellets are available in a much wider range of weights, and make a slightly bigger hole. The weight helps them stay on target in a breeze and push through atmospheric resistance to conserve more velocity downrange.

But, it's also harder to shoot because dat trajectory.

.177 is good for target shooting and smaller birds. .22 is better for bigger birds and mammals.

I know this because I've spent years actually shooting things will pellet guns. I draw this conclusion from 1st hand experience and muh physics backs it up.

The point is that a person, be it you, or anyone else can theorize about how it should be or probably is, but real world experience puts it all to rest. Why? #1 because that's the end goal anyway, but also because real world tests take into account things that theoretical models don't.

TL;DR: you're over-thinking it. .22s conserve energy at distance better than 177s.

The real question is are you good enough at estimating distance and Kentucky-windage-ing to make more effective use of a .22 or would you rather have an easier shooting but less power with a .177?

The problem with his formula/argument was that he was using a theoretical model that takes place in a vacuum, ie, without any atmospheric variables/resistances.

It comes in both .22 and .177, short (flush with the end of the slide/body) and long barrel (pic related).

I bought the long barreled .22 version last summer and have killed 20+ ground squirrels with it. Thing is so fucking accurate I was cutting down wild flowers at like 15-20 yards and on paper the holes touch at 20 yds. This is all freestanding, no rest of any kind.

The outer barrel sleeve is only held on by a set screw, so you can take it off and slip on a suppressor very easily. (If it's legal where you live).

There are plenty of good break barrel rifles out there. Gamo and is just not one of them. Neither is Benjamin anymore. Or Beeman. All these good brands went to shit.

Try RWS. I have one of their cheaper models (mod. 34) and it's still the best air rifle I've ever had.

.177 is fine for squirrels trust me. I know a few people who use .177.
At some distance, a .22 pellet from a gun firing 800 fps will have the same energy as a lighter .177 pellet from, say a gun firing 1200 fps. The lighter, faster .177 will have flatter trajectory too.
