I've used both of them, actually pretty much exactly the ones in the picture. I've used a jansport scout model and I currently own a gregory shasta. I used the hell out of my jansport but I switched to the gregory for the larger load capacity (that and I got the thing for 60 bucks).
External frames are solid, stand up easier and you can strap shit to the frame easily (such as your sleeping pad, tent, etc.)
Internal frames usually have a lot of packspace and a lot of small loops and tons of compression straps for you to strap almost anything around anywhere, and my gregory is highly adjustable, even with a large load (it has a "max" capacity of 81 liters.)
TLDR: They're both pretty much the same to me for what I want to do, I just like using my gregory since It's badass.
