Swiss mints/altoids kit thread.
So I'm building my first altoid EDC kit and need some help. Please post yours and explain you have in them and why

Worst case you could use the duct tape and fashion a bowl, but that is a waste of otherwise good duct tape.

The safety pins should be stainless steel. The aluminum ones are utter shit. Lastly, if you can get a tiny pair if needle nose tweezers in there, then you have a means of helping with stitching yourself or someone else or digging debris from a nasty gash. Also in stainless of course.

Basically anything metal, aside from the knife should be stainless. You never know what kind of tool you will need to make to save yourself and stainless will mitigate any potential infections.

I use a 2oz tobacco tin for mine not an altoids (there's a better seal around the lid and it's easier to make watertight). The inside of the lid can be polished to a mirror finish so no need for a mirror.

I used the list from the SAS survival guide by John Wiseman.

Would char cloth be better than cotton balls for tinder?

I'm stuck on this idea of carving something useful out of fatwood. Maybe carve an altoids tin sized box for a survival tin? You can burn the box, or use shavings for tinder. Would this be a good idea?

Sounds like a lot of work for a box. You could take a small piece of fat wood, size of a childs finger. Put a hole through it, lanyard, attach to keys if you really want.

Don't make a whistle then? Carve a model of big foot, that can be like 3-4 inches tall, if you need fire that badly, big foot will sacrifice his life in order to keep you warm.

General Advice:
NEVER use combined tools!
Like a knife, whistle or mirror with integrated Compass.
The fact that you will have it out of the pocket more often because of the double use increases the risk of losing it.
And if you lose your knife/mirror/whistle and compass at the same time you may just be uber fucked.
Also get a big compass in a bright color, not those little black things, that you drop once on the ground in the woods and never find them again.

IMO, as an exercise in minimizing gear, these mini-survival kits might have some sort of value but in the real world, they're far too small to be of any use in the wilderness while in an urban environment, the items contained in the kit can be easily acquired as needed at any party store or gas station.

I've also seen some custom knife sheaths that have an attached pouch for (what I assume) is a fire starting kit using an Altoids type tin;

to make life simper I'd stick in a photon light freedom 2, an aquamira frontier emergency water filter and a space blanket- there would probably be room for it all too if you dumped the other shit

Not all, though, and that's where survival comes in.

I agree commercial kits skimp on the fishing gear to the point of near uselessness but I think hooks and a decent length of strong line are still a good idea.

I would assume tourniquet, but I could be mistaken. In an edc thread, I would think a wrapped condom would make more sense because it could be used to prevent babbies and bleeding but that is just me.

Last resort really. You'd be better off making a fish trap and snacking on the bait (worms). They don't carry parasites and after a quick rinse they're dirt free.

Same goes for the water. If you have no way to purify, just drink it and keep your fire roaring. You'll either be found within the WEEKS more waterborne diseases take to develop, or you won't be found alive anyway.

Telling someone where you'll be, when you'll be there and when you expect to return is far more valuable than ANY pocket survival kit.
