When I servied in the Norwegian army in the mid 90's there were still some borderline "historic" gear in use.
Some of the small shovels (each soldier had one) were US WWII milsurp I believe and our helmets looked like something out the Vietnam war, heavy and not very comfortable.
Old wooden skis that was usualy a pain in the ass. Compared to modern skis these were like two pieces of wood board; hence their name "NATO Planks".
External frame backpacks with unpadded, leather shoulder straps and no waist strap.
Uncompressed sleepingbag on top of backpack. Tarp strapped on the outside. We lined the backpacks with regular civilian black garbage bags to make them more waterproof.
We werent issued a knife, only a dull bayonet (probably Korea/Vietnam war-era), so alot of the guys added personal knifes. Being stationed in Northern Norway, the traditional sami knifes was a big hit. Those are very historical!
