hey sc/out/s, I'm in need of a good softshell for spring. Been looking at the Arc'teryx Gamma LT. Any other suggestions?

Also, I'm not looking for the tactical look, if I was then I'd probably wait for TAD to restock the Stealth Hoodie LT.

I really like the cut of the Arc'teryx jackets, most brands I find are too boxy so it's either too tight in the chest or too loose around the waist. What other brands are cut well like this?

seem to me like a shit load of money
while i gear fag a lots i still cheap out on a lot of stuff since i can't see the extra being worth it.

The Gamma LT is only $250, so it's one of their more affordable ones.

I have the Beta SL hardshell and it's great, but I dislike wearing hardshells unless it's really raining out.

Arc'teryx makes great gear and it fits me like nothing else, no binding etc. As for value for money that's a very personal opinion. Probably depends on what you use it for and how often. I couldn't see myself spending $700 on an Alpha SV but I'm not an Alpinist

Have you tried it on? Be aware that it is very thin. I have a pair of Gamma LT pants and they are comfotable as hell and doesn't weight anything, but so thin that even a small spark from a fire will/can burn a hole. Depending on your activity they might be too flimsy.

Beta SL is awsome, I wore it for four seasons last year, but have switched over to a Theta for winter use now, the Beta got a bit short and cold. But it might be the most jacket-per-dollar you can get from Arc'teryx.

I ment the fabric is very lightweight and might actualy be a bit fragile depending on what you will be doing. But this is based on the Gamma pants, I never checked out the jacket.

I am between a med and large, so picked up a large. Was too large!

Also, did not like the neck too much. Zipped up it felt a little restrictive despite the jacket being too big for me, when unzipped, the collar kinda stuck out and flapped about.

I've seen a few softshells recently with MVTR and waterproof ratings similar or better to those of some high-end waterproof hard shells. What's the benefit of a hardshell over a softshell?

Arc'Teryx fag here. You're paying partly for the warranty, and for the R&D. Everything they do is purpose minded. I have three jackets, two packs, pants and my rock climbing harnesses are all from them.

I used to be a big North Face fag, but ever since they were bought out by Vanity Fair Magazine, their quality went to utter shit and would only consider Summit Series items if buying. Dealing with their warranty department makes me want to punch puppies- and I love puppies.

In either of these I mentioned, you will be just as warm for less than half the weight and at the same price point if you shop around. Whiskeymilitia is currently having an Arc'Teryx sale, REI has the Celerium LT on sale right now...and eBay all day er' day.
