5-7 Day Backpacking Weight

No.482955 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
God damn it /out/, how are these smug bastards getting their 5 to 7 day packs to 'featherweight' status? Are some of you rounding your numbers down to feel better about yourselves and "forgetting" to list an item or two, or are you rounding up to be conservative? What about food- the best I've done (with high calorie intake in mind) is ave'd about 2.2lbs of food a day- which includes three solid meals and four snacks = 15lbs of food for seven days at 4500cal ave.

My 7-day pack, all loaded up weighs around 45lbs without water, and without sacrificing my safety kit (which to me is supremely important to me and weights 2lbs) there has to be a way I can lighten up. What are you minimalists doing?

Examples:
This guy...I think is full of shit, but has everything needed to 27lbs, which doesn't seem outlandish, I just don't think he's being forthright in his claims:

This dude has his entire 5 day setup + food at a claimed 26lbs!

tl;dr: Dude brings up some interesting points about light weight multi-day backpacking and how retailers such as REI don't really push the mantra because weekend warriors are too stupid to know any better.
