Hey /out/ I was wondering are camelbaks a good investment for long hikes? I usually use just a canteen or bottles of water but my friend recommended getting on of these. Any opinions?

I use a 3.0L Platypus Big Zip myself. Prefer it over the Camelbak having used both. I'd say they're a good investment but there's nothing wrong with a bottle, a Hydration bladder is just better imo.

I love my little camelbak pack here, near the back is the spot where you can replace/remove the hydration bladder, so if you feel like leaving it for your day hike then you can do just that.

Got a military surplus one from the flea market that was missing a part, sent an email to camelbak. After they sent me a part to a different hose then just sent an entire new bladder AND 2nd hose. Great service, would recommend

Hell yeah. I love my Osprey Manta. The rigid bladder is way better than dealing with floppy sacks.
Plus the pack itself is tough as hell. Abused the shit out of it doing crap like carrying around 50+ lbs of jagged rocks in it and it has held up quite well.

I really don't think Camelbacks are worth it. I have used them before for backpacking and day hiking, but I prefer putting a Nalgene on a carabiner or an easily accessible holder on my backpack. Part of why I don't like them is that I can't see how much I'm drinking, so I would run out of water way too early. I also found it messed with the way I packed my backpack and that I couldn't fit things in the way that I liked and couldn't fit everything in that I had before. If you're backpacking in a region where you need to use bear canisters, say goodbye to the space inside your pack.
However, it's really all up to your preference. My friends swear by them and consider me insane.

Camelbaks (brand) are too expensive. You can buy a bladder, hose and bite valve at Walmart for 10 bucks and incorporate it into your existing pack pretty easily. I used the leg from a pair of jeans to protect the bladder and hung it inside my Duluth pack. Works great.

camelbak makes a little inline flow meter that shows the quantity drunk and remaining.
i like mine for biking. I have places to put my wallet, keys, a jacket etc and don't have to fiddle with a water bottle.

I have a bladder I use and they're certainly useful when the alternative is taking off your backpack, opening it, rummaging through your stuff, drinking, putting it back in, closing, and putting the backpack back on. If you can reach your water bottle without taking off your backpack, it's not all that useful.

In general, I'd say, if you often find yourself being annoyed at that situation and you can get one for cheap, do it.

A bladder type water system is good, but it doesn't have to be camelbak pack. I have a camelbak unbottle 100 (3L) and it's just a bladder with a cover with D rings so it can be attached and whatnot. It's worth it for long hikes, but make sure to mount it high so you mainly drink by gravity.

Reversible (for easy peasy cleaning), pressurized bladders for cleaning, sharing, irrigating wounds, or just spraying people. They come with a life time warrenty, and the packs have lots of variety. They also make in line water filters that's made to attatch to the system. They have a charcoal filter that makes all water potable. Viruses, crypto, and bacteria proof. best filter I've found (inb4 sawyer, which can't filter viruses)

I've been carrying an Eddie Bauer hydration pack for a while now and it's fucking awesome. It's large enough to store gear for a day hike, and a 2 liter pouch to tore a decent amount of water. Ripstop material throughout also. I used to work at an Eddie Bauer outlet, so it's a little dated and can't find a picture. But seriously, if you have an outlet near you go check it out. It's solid 10/10 I love mine.

They have a lifetime guarantee on everything. Literally everything. If it ever wears out to the point where you don't want it you can swap it out. Legit as balls, bruh.
