Killing Moles And Mice

Last year planted a whole bunch of buckwheat, as well as carrots, and a bunch of other stuff.
Moles and/ or mice obliterated 100% of buckwheat and a ton of other stuff.

How can I stop this? A low chicken wire fence might work for mice, but I had some burrow holes coming through the soil. Chicken wire against the soil? I don't know.

Gonna have to dig a trench and make that fence into the ground if they are burrowing. Otherwise I'd say you should get a slingshot, and take up sitting out on the porch for some target practice!

A year ago I started a /pest/ general thread and it got spammed pretty hard by a bunch of peta cucks crying about the noble pests in my garden, so don't be surprised if that happens here.

Chicken wire can help but it probably won't do much unless you lay down the wire and then put the dirt you are going to be planting in on top of that. I had a mole last year who was terrorizing my newly planted garden by uprooting the small starts from burrowing under them. Poison didn't work, but a good old fashion claw trap. pick related

That's what I was thinking about doing. How deep do you think I should go?

Also thinking about having a small vertical fence a few inches high to keep out any mice.

I put chicken wire at the bottom of my raised beds and then filled those up all the way pretty much, so I was about 18-24in deep with dirt, but it all depends on what you want to grow I guess and how deep of a root base it needs.. Also, moles don't actually go after plants, seeds or roots. They are interested in worms and grubs, but they can wreak havoc on young plants by burrowing through the roots or pushing them out of the ground while tunneling.
Mice and gophers are likely your suspects if the actual plants themselves were eaten, and not eaten by bugs.

Yeah, he was a fucking brute. After I took those pictures I dumped his ass right back into the hole I pulled him from as a deterrent to his friends and family. No moles since

Would mice burrow? There are holes about 3-4" in diameter.

I've had a lot of mice burrow in tunnels around my tomatoes. I put a hose in one end and waited at the other with a wooden mallet, seemed sporting. I never got one, but once my tomatoes really came in I didn't care.

Mice do burrow quite a bit actually, so it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case here. They also will use pre existing holes for dens too. When I was growing up some field mice took shelter in the ground under my dads fruit trees and ate the shit out of the roots. This was 20+ years ago and the trees have been stunted significantly by that. Are you able to use a rototiller on your plot?

It's all private land, but I don't have a rototiller. It's all very basic and pretty small. Just a series of beds, just inches off the ground.

You should just hand turn the dirt with a shovel then to make sure you destroy and tunnels that are currently there. Be vigilant and keep an eye out for new burrows, and if you find some make sure to put a trap in there to catch the bastard. Good luck!

Dig down to clay level, put that fencing INTO said clay, fill back in. Dig out All the dirt you plan to use section by section, down to clay, lay roll of fencing, unroll till hit other side of fencing. Tie those fences together with aluminum wire, FULLY enclosed garden area, plus aerated and turned over.

Start by treating for grubs. They are the food they love the most and eliminating them will help with the problem. The other thing I've heard is juicy fruit. You have to go step on all the tunnels, then wait the next day and see which ones come back up. Place a few sticks of juicy fruit gum (wearing latex/nitril gloves) in those tunnels.

They use a few main thoroughfares daily, the rest are feeding tunnels that only get used once.
