Good evening /out/, I often read about people buying tarp to build an easy shelter with it.
I want to look into that in Order of saving me the space for a tent.

Can you use the same Tarp for different kinds of tent builds (tipi etc.)? How big of a tarp would I need? (I'm arround 2 meters)

I have a 2x3m tarp and a 3x4. The small one weighs 600g and the large 1.2kg.
If I just want to go hiking alone in summer, I bring the smaller tarp for a basic shelter.
If I need more, I use the small one as a floor cover and pitch the big one. That way I can make a 2x3m tent, or protect about 3x3m from rain, depending on how I build it.

I use just the basic stuff you find at hardware stores. I googled it and it has 100g/m^2 which is perfect IMO.

Rope between 2 trees and all edges tied to logs/rocks on the ground is ideal.

For the 1-person shelter, I stick 1 hiking pole (or a wooden stake) in the ground, tie the middle of the shorter tarp side to it, tie all edges to stuff on the ground, and cover them with dirt if it gets really nasty.
Makes a bivouak-type shelter with only one small opening (away from the wind).

also tipi isn't exactly a tarp but special tent (for example former soviet union armies use to have those - two raincoats makes one tent without a floor)

I carry my sleeping bag tied under my backpack, could I just put the tarp arround it (to protect it from rain but also to save space)?

550 Paracord if you want to be on the safe side during a storm. But really, a 3mm nylon cord has held my tent during a 10 beaufort storm before. But that was on a campground with facilities. I wouldn't trust my life or a trip on it.

A tarp can be helpful in a sudden storm. Raise a single tentpole from under it, and roll it as loosely as possible around yourself so that most importantly the ground is covered. If the storm seems persistent, just get into your sleeping bag, but keep the "tent" loose to make sure air circulates inside. I find it an easier task than raising an actual tent, plus you can open it on one side relatively easily if you want to start a fire or a trangia.

A nylon-silicone tarp would probably be preferable to a hardware store one for shelter. Why? Lighter, packs down smaller, and you won't get kept up at night by CRACKLE CRACKLE CRACKLE.

biggest problem in the rain without having a tent, is that most tents form a sort of half bag on the ground, where you have basically a tarp for a floor that runs a foot up the wall. Ideally, if your rain fly works well, you could camp in six inches of standing water without getting wet. (Like I said, ideally, water is a very persistent foe, much like ants) So with only a tarp-tent setup, you loose the floor aspect, and run the risk of water drainage coming into your sleeping area.

IMO, if your already going camping, and bringing out all the gear to do so, a well packed tent isn't much more heavy/space consuming then a tarp. I bring a tarp and a tent though, because
A- I like to set up a sitting area when possible
and
B- Like I said, rain water will find its way into anything, so it never hurts to have extra protection
(And it seems to rain literally every time I go camping, without fail)

Water drainage can usually be avoided by finding a suitable spot to camp or digging a drainage ditch around you.
But I agree that a tent is easier.

You can't always find yourself a good, high spot with lots of clearing in the dark. But yes, there are ways to help avoid water besides having a fancy tent.
I actually still use tarps myself, because I'm a cheap fucker.

Oh, he is sad because despite how much he loves being /out/doors he figured out we're not going home for few nights. No beds, no pillow, no warmth. Before you ask, I didn't made him this way, adopted him when he was growned up. He was stray for few months so I think not coming back for the night means bad times for him.
