I'm going up to Blowing Rock, NC soon and I was wondering if any of you guys know where the best wildlife viewing spots are. I'm going with a friend who's never seen a wild bear before, and I'd love for him to be able to see one.

I was looking at Linville Gorge Wilderness Area in Pisgah National Forest. Also great hiking info is welcome! Thanks!

Linville is Gorgeous, but ill have to warn you it is damn rugged terrain and its easy to get lost if you don't have experience there or are good at navigating.

If you want to see a bear you're likely to be out of luck but you can always try the campus of UNCA.

There's a thread on /k/ right now about western NC hunters...they might know a lot about local wildlife...although they won't be just viewing wildlife.

I know how to use a compass. What kind of navigating skills are you referring to? There are trails listed online, but are those not clearly marked?

There are unclear trails, washouts, and even one fucker who makes his own trails & sells maps to them. Knowing to keep a clear head and watching which points in the distance youre heading to is very important.
If youre using the Nat Geo Maps (very good but too general btw) make sure youre watching your trail for landmarks/switchbacks/anything also visible on the map. Its better to go down the wrong trail and know so quickly because of a switchback that you never saw than to go up/down for hours until youre beginning to question everything

Its steep as hell in places but you shouldn't need to do climbing unless you set out to.

Really depends on how much you want to strain yourself. If you want a relatively nice overnight you can drop of at the Linville Gorge Trail into the gorge, following it until you see a campsite you like (there are plenty, dont jump on the first one you see, a lost or tired or inexperienced hiker may need to use it) the next morning, you can continue moving south and climb (figuratively but its a hard trail) back up the west side of the gorge to Wiseman's View. From there you can walk the road back to your car.

If you want a really simple trip with no time directly in the gorge, Shortoff Mountain (Southeast edge of the wilderness ) is a great, GREAT trip with amazing views, a mountaintop year-round pond, and post-wildfire regrowth. Its a little weird to navigate up to the parking lot for it but a harder alternative can be to head south on the ridge from Tablerock Mtn & The Chimneys (there is a parking lot for Tablerock) this is much longer though.

If you want the full, most difficult, comprehensive look around--
Dont, its stupid unless youve visited the area repeatedly.

I suggest getting both a Linville-specific map & the Nat Geo map of Mt.Mitchell/Linville, the latter is better at roads while the former is better at contours
