Is it possible to use a tent as a permanent residence? Is it possible to live in a city and ride into the outskirts of a town and just set up a tent somewhere?

Ya I knew a guy who did that and also had a mattress in his truck. He had a gym membership that he used to work out and shower at. I think he eventually found a cheap apartment tho

Get a van. Your scenario is totally possible. I do this on road trips using an old jeep xj. Get pic related and live like a vagabond king. Get a gym membership for showering and keep posessions to a minimum. You could also go the tiny house route for something more long term.

My father lived in a tent on a friend's property for over a year. Would keep water in a bag and have it warmed by the Sun and would take showers with it.

My step brother lived on the beach in a tent in Monterrey California for 8 months right after high school. Used the public showers. Got jobs. Spent just about every waking moment in the ocean. Way fun. I know a bunch of homeless guys in my town that have a tent city by one of our rivers. They've been there for years. Go for it man! Live a little.

on the plus side many, if not most cities in the U.S. have tent cities where you can do this with other like minded bums.

This had been an experiment from my side, upper middle class kid, always friendly response, police always greeted me with a smile, so it might sound abit hipsterish or similiar but I had to live outdoor.

After my beard grew and such people just turned outright evil, the harresment from police just for heading towards to buy grocery and shampoo was abhorrent.

Be careful out there. It's not easy.
