I'm in the woods and it's raining and my tent isn't properly waterproofed.

Now what?

Also how to i have fun in wet weather? Probably going to make some tea i guess.

I was in a rush to set up camp, i was planning on using a hammock but the weather turned bad, tent was the backup.

Word, do you have a groundcloth of sorts? The floor is what will really suck if it leaks as you are in direct contact with it. Also, find ground that is higher so you aren't sleeping in a lake in the morning.

The bottom of the tent is "water resistant" but no no ground sheet, will remember for next time, i do have a mat to lie on though, not pictured is a steep drop off, ground is fairly high.

I only made that mistake one trip. It was an old tent that I didn't spray before my trip.

It rained early one morning, completely soaked everything. While I was letting everything dry in the day (desert) it rained again soaking my sleeping bag.

I ended up having an emergency blanket and hot hands in it. Slept toasty.

I'm inbetween big properties in the suburb of Dural, if you want to enjoy sydney i reccomend Blue Mountains, Cox River is pretty sweet to hike and camp near.

i bring my kindle and read. i have the kindle that has the lighted screen. it lasts for over a week reading every night.

i also have a real tent with a vestibule and a ground sheet, and bring a change of clothes. and a poncho. that way if i want to walk around in the rain i can, and get rid of my wet shit before getting into the tent.

rei is the go to 'upper class walmart of outdoors' here, and i would recommend any of their products. you may have something similar there i dunno i have never been down under.

pretty much just get a well made tent that has a rain fly. and preferably a footprint to help with the bottom moisture. i have a kelty and love it but im sure there are other brands that will work just fine.

if you don't want to spring for a footprint put plastic trashbags under your sleeping mat. you should always carry a trashbag or two anyways they can be super useful. that way atleast the ground moisture wont get into your sleep system.

and yea, i can't recommend that kindle enough. i think its called the kindle light or something. its not really a backlight, the light comes from the back but shines on the front. that way it lasts forever. and if you are worried about breaking it i take it with me in my computer bag outer pocket everyday on the train, which is far harder on it than stuffed in my clothes on the trail, and it hasn't failed me in 3 years.

I just suck it up, throw over my poncho, open my umbrella (i hate hoods of any kind on my head) and continue walking. I might get wet lower legs and most likely wet feet, but that's part of the experience for me.

If i need to stay comfy i better stay home.

Going through a forest in the rain is quite an experience. Maybe you find some kind of dry spot where you can pitch your tent.

beside moisture/vapor /heatsink barrier it protects tent bottom form getting hole poked in it from stuff on the ground.

treat your tent with waterproofing spray at least once a year

Yeah I am, it's great because there are times when it's crazy windy or I'm on a sandy surface ( fraser island ) and pegs are a no - go and I can weigh the tent down with my pack

I just wish I could find a proper foot print for it in Aus, because my tarp takes up a shitload of the exterior space in my pack

custom footprints are usually bulky and useless. Just make one out of tyvek or similar. I have the lightest tarp I could find and cut it to size. Its wearing out after 5 years, but takes up no room, took an hour to make, and cost 5 dollars.

That's a dangerous game, OP. I would recommend synthetic fibers just in case the rain gets under your raingear somehow.

Anyway, a few things I've found about camping in the rain:
>always use a groundcloth of some sort
>make sure to tuck it under the tend so it doesn't collect water and make a lake under you
>make sure nothing touches the walls of your tent, or water will come in there
>prevent your rain fly from touching your tent as much as possible, you want the water to stay on that outer layer
Essentially, you want the things that you touch to be dry. For them to stay dry, you want to minimize their points of contact with wet things.

Also, I think I had that tent, it is shitty as fuck, and def not waterproof. It won't drip vertically unless you touch the ceiling, so lay low. The water drops usually run down the slanted surface until they reach the walls.
If you have a poncho, try and use it to protect your tent.
I used this tent during one summer. Never again.

You look the milsurp type. Buy one or two Plash Palatkas. They're waterproofable if not waterproof, cheap as fuck (10$ each or so), and very durable. Just a tad heavy, but meh.

Also known as housewrap. Its just a paper like material used as a water/vapor barrier in construction. Its super light, very compact, and best of all super cheap (or free if you can find a construction site. They usually have tons of scrap Tyvek).
