Can anyone here track?
How do I learn to track?
Is the indian tracking in movies when they look at a leaf on a branch and say
"white man. move. 1 horse. 1 donkey. 3 week ago. heading west toward mountain pass. 3 mile per hour. carry 2 rifle. 1 woman. woman knitting at time of passing. knitting sweater. sweater have kitty on it. man and woman argue about color. woman knit sweater too small. she not have enough yellow yarn. man say that ok, he like orange better. ask if she can put dog on it too. woman get annoyed."
is that shit real or can people really track that good?

Here is some fun shit you can do this very weekend with minimal cost and prep: beelining!

That's right out-man, beeline.

1) set some sexy bee bait. Honey water, sugar water, pop resinous syrup etc.

2) when a bee finds your shit he will settle to fill up his cargo bay. When he does this, mark his back with a white paint pen. Don't hit the wings! And don't worry, the bee has a one track mind and won't notice.

3) observe: the bee will lift off, bobble around a bit while he sets his GPS and then buzz off in a straight line. Follow the bee until you lose sight and then...

4) Halt: stop and reset your bait. The bee will return along the exact same axis with his homies. Bees from other tribes will arrive too, so look for the one you marked.

5) when you see your bee bro, follow him again and then repeat step 4 when you lose him. eventually you'll find his tree, or wherever his hive be at.

Robbing the hive is a different matter. I'll tell you how if you like.

There are ways you can figure out approximates but it's not as simple as looking at a leaf. Unsuspecting humans put out a considerable amount of trash and don't pack it in, fresh trash, in date wrappers, etc can be examined to get an idea of how many people are traveling, and then you can just examine footpaths, and footprints to figure out a little better how many are moving and with what kind of gear / animals. You really have to take in the whole picture, you have to examine tracks, paths, breaks in obstacles, campsite setups, etc.

It can also give good indicators of the skill level and awareness of those you're tracking. People who attempt to cover their tracks, lead you off to many dead ends, break obstacle in non obvious ways, so on so forth may be on to you and may know a thing or two about wasting your time.

Sometimes if you lose the tracks it does get a little "spirit of the wind" because you have to make educated predictions of their movement based on previous directions, so map reading really goes hand in hand with it, if someone or something is making a bee line for a lake, they're prolly going to keep going for the lake.

Just go /out/ and practice. Animals everywhere. Look for tracks and follow them. You can look up photos of animal prints or rubbings or spoor and behavior. The ONLY way you can get good at following them is to get out and follow them.

Short answer, that image of tracking is (strictly said) bullshit.

Longer answer (probably repeating what someone here already said):

If you look for a good amount of time, you can find surprising details about someone.

>broken twig
General direction of movement
>depth of tracks in mud/sand/soft ground
If it's deeper than your tracks, that person is heavier than you (or carrying something). This can be seen during robberies, people go in lighter and out heavier. Not much of an indication, but with training you can spot the spot where a rider dismounts/mounts.
>yarn
You'd have to fucking look for that one, not really applicable anywhere other than innawoods. People snag on shit. If they snag, they leave a piece of clothing there. But as I said, you'd have to look for that one.

This would probably be invisible, unless there are no other people going along that track during that time. Also it can be said from the weather.

Not really that easy to deduce, you'd really have to find a diary. Best you could find is "they use two colours of yarn"

That's something to do with pace length, if their feet are further apart, they are running. Closer, they're walking. One foot prints deeper than the other, they're favouring the other leg.

That would either have to do with 2 dropped casings of different size or something. Of course that would be EXTREMELY difficult to see 3 weeks after they passed.

Also, what I've found while toying around with animal tracking (animals have almost no feeling for OPSE/k/, they shit where they go) is that you're considerably slower than the animal you're tracking. This is partly because you have to look for individual tracks, bypass shit they just go through, and pay attention because age of tracks is indefinite.

The weather part - by this I meant that if no solid rain occured in 3 weeks (not probable where I live) you can say that those tracks cannot be older than the last time rain occured.

Holy shit I ran out of letters there, see above. You could think "yeah, these tracks are about 2 hours old, that durr's long gone" and suddenly you bury your face in fragrant durrass. That's about all I could think of when I think tracking. Feel free to correct me, I'm no expert.

Coyotes have small, but clearly defined paw prints, and foxes have more blurred, hard to read paw prints because they have more fur between their toes.
