Basic survival backpack

Hey /out/ I want to make my very own outdoor/survival pack. I have this ALICE pack (pic related) and I want to fill it with basic things used for camping/survival. Well I know I have to add a sleeping bag, flashlight, hatchet, multi tool, knife, matches, compass. But what am I missing? What can i add to this pack? Aside form getting a frame for it. Give me some ideas /out/

My only advice is to always take matches, lighter pencil and paper. Those things weigh nothing and should be auto include before anything else, and kept on your person at all times.

Whenever I see survival packs and they have all of these small useless things in there that are comforts, my instant reaction is- Okay buddy, you're lost in the woods for a week, you ran out of food 5 days ago and you're too weak too move, but atleast you have nail clippers duct tape and a bandana.

At minimum an extra 2 days worth of food, which can be reasonably rationed for a week.

I stupidly gotta pack about that small at big 5. It's a tiny little day pack with a built-in hydration pack, but its waist strap only barely reaches around my middle when adjusted to maximum.

Get a good 32-48oz stainless steel bottle.
Get a lot of paracord.
Get a decent tarpaulin, an 8x10 nylon tarp is an indispensable survival tool, it can serve as a tent, a hammock, a rain cover, a wind block, anything. Don't be afraid to spend an upwards of $70 on a tarp.
A wool blanket is also a good addition depending on your environment.

I got my very first rucksack yesterday. A Swedish 35Lk rucksack. I plan to use it for learning bush craft and weekend camping but not as a BOB. This thread appeals to me.

There is webbing on the metal frame so the metal never touches your skin. It creates nice airflow between you and the rucksack. It's actually quite comfy.

I agree with >>494591 that for a typical 35L backpacking load, that amount of support is probably unnecessary, and would just be extra weight to tire you out.

but maybe you need to carry many L of water for a long/hot trip? definitely let your intended application guide your equipment purchases.

Actually, that's what I do. The only change is my knife isn't full tang but I don't need it to be. My list includes an estwing E45A, mora companion, and a buck fg110. I also have the small blade on my leatherman but that seldom gets used. No problems.

At least with the combo you have a backup when one breaks to buy you more time. If that's your thing anyway.

You can take the pack off the frame and strap pretty much anything to the frame. If you have a light load you can just strap a few small pouches to it and a wool blanket. If you need to carry more shit you can strap an 80L canvas or nylon pack to the thing. You could even use the pack to carry a garbage bin full of your gear, then the bin can be used for holding water or other things once you're at camp. Super versatile.

I use this for camping solo.

-Green patrol bag/wool blanket if it's cold enough
-Taurus 2 tent
-Tyvek groundcloth
-3/4 self inflating Therm-a-rest pad
-Alcohol stove/cook kit. I think it's a 750ml pot, It's the perfect size for cooking Ramen noodles or a cup of rice
-I have a good size water bottle that holds about 4 cups and fits perfectly in the side pouch
-Mini Sawyer filter

That's about it. It doesn't weigh too much and I have plenty of room for food and extra clothes or rain gear and whatever depending on where I'm going and how long. You really don't need 90% of the shit that goes into BOB's.

At least 5 boxes of ammunition
500+ feet of paracord
16 ounce water bottle
At least 1 multitool

Now you're to survive with the best of them. Tarps and tents are waste of time. Real men built shelters out of sticks and twigs.
