Pickups are actually pretty good as far as space goes, I've camped in one for a week before

Build yourself a patrol box / chuck box / camp kitchen (pic related).

They are very handy at camp (also good for storing camping stuff at home) and as you're car-truck-vehicle camping and not backpacking up Mt.McKinley, size and weight isn't an issue.

I started a patrol box thread late last year where I posted a ton of patrol box pics, which you might be able to track down via the archive.

That depends where you are. But ive heard the same thing. Rabbit is a hit and miss meat for me. Its really nice, but the risk is too high so i end up char-grilling it until i know there is nothing left on it to make me sick. By that point though i might as well be eating bark.

State forests are gud becuase they're free, but they're mostly plantations and crime scenes.

These blueprints are from the Boy Scouts, based on designs from the 1960s at least and can be used as a general plan, though I'd suggest designing your own patrol box for your specific gear and type of /out/ings you're doing.

I'd also suggest running any ideas by /diy/, as they have actual skills and knowledge for building stuff.

Car camper here. It's fun and shit, but I really want to get into dispersed camping. Anyone here go from dispersed camping to car camping? Would love to hear why, and maybe any tips you might have. I already know I'm going to have to downsize my tent from a 4 person to a 1 person, which is going to be difficult since I can't find any quality 1p 3 season tents on the cheap. Food shouldn't be too much of a problem to slim back on, I pretty much have everything else too since I travel light when car camping anyway. Any good 1p3s tent recommendations that won't bankrupt me?

My first experience car camping wasn't that long ago. I've always hated campgrounds and loved dispersed camping, but when I came to the Alvord Desert in Oregon to camp on the playa (pic related), the 40+ mph gusts made me take down my tent like an hour after putting it up.

So, I slept in my car and it was cozy, but fuck, I wish I had a van. My car is pretty much a sedan disguising itself as an SUV, it can barely manage 30mph on gravel/dirt. I at least got comfortable, and ended up spending 9 days driving around the west, sleeping in national forests, and not pitching my tent at all. It is fucking hard to keep organized when you're sleeping, driving, and sometimes eating in the same place.

I ditched my MSR stove and got a $18 butane cook top. Its cheaper to run and runs way hotter. Too hot for my soloist cookset made of stainless. So I'll buy a proper non stick pan and pot with lids. I bought a Marmot Trestle 0 synthetic bag. Bulky but I'm not walking anywhere with it. You will see my tent packed up. Its a 5000mm top and tub water proof hikers tent at 1.3kg packed up. I'll post a pic of it set up. I'm going to sell it.
I found my p 7.2 led lenser isnt ideal. A head torch would be better car camping. I found I need 2 or 3 storage tubs maybe. To store my food in one say 20ltr, small bits and pieces like toothbrush and batteries etc etc in 5ltr, a pull tight bag for dirty clothes.
I store things like my goretex clothes and laptop on my front passenger seat. I keep my contact lenses in the middle console because I hate losing that shit. Moisture on the inside in the morning can be bad and its about 5c in the morning. I need to buy a chamois or microfiber to wipe it down.
What do I eat? Everything. But I need a chilly bin to keep things under 4c.

I'm way late on the reply here but my one tip if you're sleeping in the car is to fill the area between the floor and the front seat with stuff that is about the same height as the cargo floor. That's what I do and it works great. I'm 6'3 and can stretch out no problem.

I have a great, fluffy foam mattres, It's like a queen sized bed bag full of fluffy foam. I love it, and i can turn it into a bean bag chair if i like.

I was thinking of buying a large hamock, and a van and using the mattress in the hamock in the van, then folding it all up and having a chair for reading in and such. My question is simply a request for you to poke holes in my plan.

Rig yourself a really simple kitchenette set-up (propane stove, pump sink, storage cabinet) and insulate the van a little bit and it sounds like a pretty boss set up.

Good idea on the stove. I'm mostly just planning out my future idea's on cheap living but i'm glad there are no obvious holes in it.

They certainly make big enough hammocks.

Yeah, then you'd want to swap insulation for ventilation. Get a couple pop-up roof windows and a basic electric fan.

Hell, even a basic solar set-up isn't that expensive these days. You could power some fans, a small electric cooler and a few other modern amenities off one or two panels, an inverter and a deep cycle battery or two.

Luckily, with the tiny living thing taking off, there's assloads of info online about how to build a livable van set-up.
