Anybody clued up on head torches/lamps? I've been looking for one for a while and was wondering if you guys had some recs.

I've been looking at the BlackDiamond Storm since I had a go with a friends one, its great but expensive, worth it?

Yes. Bought one for a friend 4 years ago and it's still going strong. I use an Icon, but unless you're route finding on a glacier in the dark you'll be fine with any of the others.

I've got a Storm, like it so far. Adjustable power and full is pretty bright. I like that it takes 4 batteries not 3 like some of them because my charger charges in pairs. Also IPX7.

Ive had mine for about a year at this point. Personally its a really bright head lamp and is really nice. The lamps is kind of heavy, and also sucks up battery really fast. Even with the speed of chewing up batteries, its not that big of a deal. I would recommend it to pretty much anyone. And personally, my only faults are weight and battery usage. But for its price its the best head lamp I've owned

I got a Spot, girlfriend has the Storm, and got a ReVolt for Christmas.

I find the Spot and Storm to be near identical and to be very good. The Revolt is heavy and tends to slip, so I don't use it as much as the other two.

Chipping in for the Storm since everyone else is. Love it, wonderfully bright, IPX7 is great, has all the modes you need (dimming, able to switch to red without activating white, lockout is great too) and just what you need when you're finding your way to the hut at 10pm in pitch black with torrential rain because you wanted to go /out/ for the long weekend that bad.

A little late here but yeah a $40 BD headlamp will outlast 4 $10 cheapies without a doubt.

I've got a spot and it's a fantastic little piece of kit for your night time activities, it's built very solid and doesn't feel cheap. It's just a quality product that works like you expect it too, bright as fuck and the spread feature works great. If you've only used hardware store lamps before it'll be a fresh experience that you won't regret.

The Red LED is much brighter than I expected too.
I'm very happy with my purchase and it was only $30.
I bought it because it was 90 lumens and for the price, it was the most powerful headlamp I could find.

Those cheap ass chinese LEDs on amazon for like 20 bucks that are advertised as like 1200 lumens are really just a little bit brighter than the storm lamp (160lumens I think) but they come with a decent sized rechargeable battery, I use a storm on my helmet and one of those chinese shits on my handlebars for night riding and they both have held up decently.

Late to the party, but I too have a STORM. It's great and can handle anything you throw at it. I've used it when I go pooping outside of my tent in pitch darkeness and rain. Awesome. I also have 2 of the pic related model, a lot less heavy duty but you can get them in REI sales for like 15 bucks. I also have a number of Chinese crap lamps that are bulky and go through battteries like a fatass eating French fries. But Black Diamond is great from my experience

Icon user here, these are seriously one of the best investments I've ever bought for camping/night time fishing, only real problem I can think of is this thing will give me headaches after wearing for 10+ hours but maybe it's just me. Apart from that, it does the job good, it's a high powered torch on your head, handy as shit for being /out/.

I have a Revolt. My past experience was with cheap chinese ones (which really do suck in comparison) and a dollar store incandescent lamp I used to explore an abandoned mine with (so shitty I would've been better off with a carbide lamp), so the current one is god-tier relative to what I'm used to.

Bought the storm. But wish I had bought the spot. Spot might actually be brighter, and the button might be a lot easier to push. That's a big deal to me, since I turn mine on and off all night. I use mine every night. Also the spot should have plenty enough water resistance. No need for all that extra water resistance unless you are gonna wear it swimming or afraid you might fall out of a boat.
And why does it need four AAA's instead of three like everybody else?

That being said. It was the brightest one in the store for that price. And it is very bright when it has new batteries.
Flashlight fans say that led lights do not dim with battery power loss. But both brands of headlamps that I have used go dim after a couple of days.

only if it's current regulated. the BD lights are current regulated for the first 30% of charge i think, then they dim with battery level. compromise between brightness & longevity.
